Great Horned Owls

Postby Spiderman » Tue Aug 13, 2019 9:06 pm

Most of the Martins here are gone an are rarely seen during the day.

Last 2 nights 4 Great Horned owls show up around midnight. I think it is a family group. They will wake you up from a sound sleep.

I know They will kill barred owls. Are they a very big threat to purple Martins?

Oh Yes they will wreck havoc on your Purple martin colony !!!

Here is what I did, snuck out the back door at 12:30 am and took my shotgun with me and shot straight up in the air...Not sure if they have stopped flying yet or not, but scared the crap out of them I wanted them out of there and didn't care what it took !! They have not returned and its been 2 plus yrs ago.
Some people will scorn me for doing it but I'm not taking chances.

Yeah they are a top predator. If one is around even if the martins are gone may want to think about guards!

A shotgun blast, well im sure it is still going. Just the sound of a chambered round scares folks.

Spiderman, just got the purple martin magazine yesterday, in it was a piece by a LL who went through a 5 year battle with a great horned owl. She eventually won through putting up a wire enclosure around her whole set up.
Thought of your owl family sighting while reading it. Just because they are around doesnt mean they are preying on your martins, or will but the danger is there. We have an open space behind our street and i hear owls and have seen some on telephone poles in front, but have had no problems thank God.
