NC Purple Martin Society meeting

Date: June 2nd
Time: 1:30 p.m.
Where: Archer Lodge, North Carolina

Open to the Public: Yes

General Comments:  This year, our meeting will be Saturday June 2nd at 1:30pm at the home and (large!) martin colony of Debbie J in Clayton (Archer Lodge), NC, zip 27527 in Johnston County. It will be under tents outside (weather permitting) so that we may enjoy seeing the comings and goings of all of the martins there. Refreshments will be provided.

Our topics this year will include:

1. Supplemental feeding/emergency feeding and care of adult (and baby) purple martins.

2. Feeding oyster shell and eggshells - when to put out and how to prepare them.

3. Lastly, we will have a sharing time where we will ask attendees to bring one (original) helpful tip they've learned about some aspect of martin care-taking. Newbies or wannabe landlords are the exception: just come prepared to learn!

Regarding #3, if can be something you learned from someone else (be sure to give credit), with preference to tips that are not commonly publicized, and bring the tool, picture or visual aid, showing how to use it, if possible. Plan an alternate tip, so you will have something to share in case someone else shares your tip before it's your turn.

We encourage everyone to make the drive and attend. Please RSVP and let me know if you will be attending so we may plan accordingly. We look forward to meeting the first-timers and to seeing old friends once again.

The NCPMS is affiliated with the PMCA.

Directions: Archer Lodge on S Murphrey Rd near Highway 42 and Clayton NC.  Email for specific details.

24th Annual Purple Martin Field Day

Date: Saturday June 23rd

Time: 11:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.
Where: Louisa County, Virginia

Open to the Public: Yes

The 24th Annual Purple Martin Field Day is coming to VA! See 130 pairs of Purple Martins!  Last year, we had to cancel the Field Day, due to a terrible weather forecast however, the predicted storm didn't hit, and the hosts opened up the farm at the last minute so people could see the colony and ask martin questions. About 20 people came, including folks who had flown in from Louisiana!

THIS year, we are scheduling a full program! Plan to arrive before 11:00 a.m. so you won't miss the Door Prize give-away (including free GOURDS!) and the beginning of the presentations.

Lance Wood and several other speakers will teach you how to get martins, get more martins, and manage them properly so you won't lose them.

Which martin housing is the safest? gourds or houses? Do Virginia martins like gourds or houses better? COME AND FIND OUT!!!

You will learn how to protect martins from snakes, hawks, owls, raccoons, House Sparrows, Starlings, wind damage, and lightning, as well as how to grow gourds and turn them into martin homes. You'll receive free equipment catalogs and literature about martin attraction and management. Bring a bag lunch to eat while you listen to the presentations and watch the martins feeding their nestlings! Then visit with other martin-lovers!  FREE but donations are appreciated to cover expenses.

See for directions, photos, and to find out what to bring (and NOT to bring!)
