Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total (May2020)

I did a nest check yesterday... Was gone for three days..

2 complete nests, no eggs.
1 nest started..

Also this morning, an SY male is here.. he's a fiesty lil guy. Working very hard to attract a female and seems to like a BO9 gourd.. and bounces over to the lower level of the barn as well. He is loudest most vocal male I've ever seen. LoL.

If he steps up to the top level of the barn he gets chased off by the ASY male pronto. There's a complete nest up there so the ASY ain't putting up with him.

Im amazed at how close the SY male looks like an ASY female.. He makes the telltale croaking noises so it's obvious he's an SY male. He has no purple sploches on his chest.. no dark purple under the neck. Under tail seems to have brown specks as well. But yeah.. he's a male allright.

Just when the colony settles in, here comes the sy crowd to stir it up again. I like the activity.

I have seen lots of color variations of SY males over the years. So with no purple at all and others that look like they have some weird disease with random splotches all over them. It's just a good sign when you see them start moving in.

The ones I've seen before had those dark splotches.. I'm watching him right now and next to a female his chest is much darker than the female.. you can tell a bit better with an actual female next to him.. but wow.. is he ever determined to get something going. The other males are quite busy with him. He likes to peek into the gourds with nests.. then gets pounced on..lol

I've been gone the past three days and the male SY seems to have found a mate. Both were popping in and out of a gourd this morning. So now it looks like three nests and another one on tje way.. They may have started already. Gonna check later in the afternoon.
