Hi I have been trying to attract purple martins for weeks and no luck. I have been playing the dawn song on a bose speaker, are any of you familiar with that? I also have a house sparrow problem could the house sparrow be frightening the Martins away from the house . Please let me know what you're the thoughts are thanks.

If you are in northern OH the martins have just recently started to arrive in that area. Most returnees this early in the season will be going to their home from last year. I am in central Indiana and had 15 pair last year and haven't had any return yet this year so you should not be concerned at all that you haven't seen any the last couple weeks.
Are there any colonies that you know of close by your house? If so the dawnsong might drawn in a visitor but it won't lure them away from their housing unless there are problems with it. You still have months to draw in some martins to a new site in NE Ohio so be patient. About 4-6 weeks from now the SY's (those born last year) should start arriving in your area and that will be your best chance. Let us know a little info about your housing, how long you have been trying (is this your first year), what your property looks like, etc. It is not uncommon in this part of the country to try for years before getting your first pair to stay.
If you haven't already done so click on the "research" section above and check out the scout arrival map. You can isolate OH and see if there have been any reports in your area.

Martin Colony History: new in 2017, but ready for lots of birds. 44 gourds and 40 t14 style holes

I just typed an extensive reply and clicked 'submit' but it never appeared! Lost in the ethernet! too busy to type it all again. This has happened before. i'll wait to see if it appears after some sort of delay, and if it doesn't, i'll re-type it. I'm also trying to get martins in NE Ohio.

Thanks for the replies I have been trying to attract purple martins 2 years now. This year I start using the dawn song and it did a good job attracting tree swallows. I have about 6 tree swallows taking over all my blue bird houses. It is hard keeping them off my martin house. We have about 7 acres, half of it is woods and the other half is swampy fields with some decorative trees. Hope this helps.

Don't give up playing the dawn song. It will attract Martins that are in the area anytime of the day. If they like what they see maybe they will make it home. Keep in mind the dawn song will not cause them to stay if they don't like your setup. If you have a sparrow problem you should be working towards controlling them by trapping or shooting. I don't think just because the sparrows are there it would keep the Martins from coming in to check out your housing, but they will be a problem if the Martins decide to stay.

Remember scouts are always early to there native sites, for some info on when you should play the dawnsong read Andrew Troyers book, "A purple Martin Journey" he explains very clearly when you should start plaing your dawnsong .

What kind of Bose speaker are you using? Also where is the speaker and how loud is the volume. I am also trying to play the dawn song. I tried automatically playing the song from 4-6am on my front porch speakers but it is about 50 ft from the PM houses. I was thinking of putting a speaker on the gourd rack but didnt want it to be too loud and they not land. During the day I would play it pretty loud out in the middle of my yard and the martins would come fly down close to check things out but not go into the gourds. Im wondering if playing from 4-6am helps at all if the martins are not flying and scouting during the darkness. All of my gourds are either Cresent or SREH. I have the option for the round holes, but i have those plugged to keep out the unwanted birds.

I would play the dawn song as much of the day as you can. Some put it on the housing, I played mine close to the housing. If it's drawing them in to have a look it's doing it's job. It could be birds that already have a site and just coming in to see what's going on. Keep playing it until you finally get the one that is looking for a site and likes yours. Meanwhile be thinking if there is other improvements you can make that they might like better. It's a waiting game for most.

Great idea! I put my Bose waterproof speaker and battery pack on my pole. Have a scheduled task to play the morning song from my computer. We will see how it goes.

Just another question . Should I still be playing the dawn song is it to late? And if so do I put away my housing away for the year? Still new at this.
