Martin Colony History: have not had martins for last 20 yrs. trying to re establish a colony
2018 1 asy pair fledged 2

Our late asy pair hatched four eggs and all seemed to be going well. I did a nest change this afternoon and found 2 of the young had died. There were no blowflies or parasites of any kind, my only guess is they were overcome by the heat? we had several days in the 90s with high humidity. They hatched july 3rd, seemed fine when i checked them 6 days ago, the other 2 are in good shape, any thoughts?

It's hard to guess, I know it's been hot here where I am at in the Midwest, how hot have the temps been in your area the last week? I know for you it seems hot but I'm guessing it's been no hotter in your part of the country then it gets down south. Young martins survive very high temps each year down in TX, FL, etc. Did the dead ones appear about the same age as the other nestlings, or did it appear they died several day a ago?

They had been dead for several days, they were already decaying.

no, we don;t have black flies here that i'm aware of, my guess is stil it was heat related.
