Confirmed a roost in New Hamilton, MS few miles south of Aberdeen MS. Will try to post pics which are not the greatest but was unable to get close to factory where the roost was due to metal fencing all way around the plant. No close up pics but there were definitely martins. Looked like swarms of bees. Have no idea how many martins were there. I did speak to the security person in the guard house about the martins. He said they had tried to run then off using flares. I didn't like that comment but don't guess there is much I can do about that. They are roosting on the metal structures and many were going downward behind the building and I couldn't see what they were roosting on behind building. I felt like a storm chaser going from road to road around the plant trying to find the best and closest view. They were roosting at Tronox , a very large manufacturing company. No martins in trees. I really don't know what I am doing with posting these.

Good find indeed! Locating martin roosts in August is one of my favorite activities now.

I have more pictures just having difficulty posting them. will try to post link to my photo bucket today. I totally enjoyed finding this roost and watching the martins. I had help finding this roost from PMCA. Had to do little searching once I got to area but all worth it!

I have posted more links & pics to original post. If we go back soon, I will try to get additional pictures and better pictures of area and facility.

Jeff Kelly gave me directions to find the site. PMCA put me in touch with him. There was a very large pond across the road from this large industry. Also about 5-7 miles before the roost was a large water way with lock and dam.

Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

Yeah that is where these birds by my house are. The lock and dam seems to be a bug feast for them. I think at dusk they are flying to an island across the Mississippi River. I need a large boat! I have stood out on a sand bar and they head in that direction. Maybe some year I will find them.

That's the Tom Bigbee river. I may have to ride up and see that! That's just a hop and a skip from my house. Maybe 15 miles.

Tony I don't know if they are still roosting there at that factory. Let me know me know if martins are still roosting there are not. We might decide to go back for a last visit.

I live 1 mile due East of the plant. I thought that was where I saw the martins going. A buddy of mine thinks he has found another roost a couple of miles to the East of there. I will go by in the morning and see if they are still there.

Looks like they have cleared out from Tronox:

Took this last night:

Took this one early this morning:

Looks like they are using those fan pushed wind socks used in advertising to keep them off the superstructure.

They must have added the wind socks after I visited the roost area. Gate guard told me they had tried to discourage the roost from the structures by using flares. If you find another roost, let me know cause I would love to go back and see the roost before they leave this area for good this year.

Nice pictures. Looks like the place has lots of lighting at night...wondering what the noise level is from the plant?

It is actually very noisy. But obviously the martins feel safe there.
