Re: Wooden 8-room PM House

Flyin-Lowe, The room is 5"W, 6-1/2"T, 10"D. The nest tray is half an inch away from the back wall. The floor is 1/2 inch away from the back wall as well. This creates a vent all the way up to the attic. The entrance hole and the attic vent should create a natural air flow through for all of the room...

Re: Wooden 8-room PM House

Morgan,
The hawk/owl guard can be made to look a five sided box. Hang it up side down that allows
the PM to slide in/out of it when the PM house raised and lowered. If a bottom screen is needed,
this part has to be attached to the bottom pf the PM house.

Re: Wooden 8-room PM House

Hi Morgan, Yes it would be easy to a metal screen to deter Hawk attacks. All these years I have seen a hawk taking an adult male as it was coming in to roost. Your suggestion of attaching the hawk guard to the perch will allow me to raise and lower my PM houses free and clear of obstructions and doi...

Re: Wooden 8-room PM House

Hi Matt, Those aluminum housing you mentioned are still up. This season, I have seen numerous sub adults like I have seen them in the past few years. No takers. I am undecided where to put the entrances, high up on the entrance wall or low and even with the floor the way I have them on the aluminum ...

Wooden 8-room PM House

From the time I started hosting Purple Martins in 1999, I've had my ups and downs. The most I've had was 18 pairs in my two twelve home made aluminum housing. In the past six to seven years the population came down fast to one pair. The trouble are hawks in the neighborhood. My one last attempt to g...

Re: Squirrels

I know most of y'all here in this forum does not like the killing of animals no matter what. I have the solution you may want to see. I made this a while back, this is live catch trap, a re-locator trap. This made from a 1 inch square wire mesh. I found the material from my local Ace Hardware store....

Re: Squirrels

A neighbor had rat problem in his two car garage and requested to borrow my experimental rat traps.i saw an opportunity to try them out. After two weeks he caught 10 rats that were in his garage. The rat raps I made are with a 1-1/2 inch and a 2 inch PVC pipes. I think one with a 2-1/2 inch pipe wil...

Re: Starlings SREH Video

I wish every one that are using entrance other than SRE in their PM housing
would watch this video. For the past 20 some odd years I've used this
simplistic old design that works in my home made PM housing. This will
change those minds that do not believe that this design works.

Great video!

Re: Air Rifle .177 Paper Work

DKC,
I have a shop air compressor assisted air rifle/scuba tank compressor.

I used to use a manual pump (a bicycle looking pump) to fill my PCP air rifle.
That got to be way too much for me to handle.

Re: Air Rifle .177 Paper Work

I used to be able to use iron sights, today in order for me to see the front and rear iron sights, I have tilt my head backwards to use the bottom portion of may eye glasses. With that, the target becomes a blur. With any air rifle, stay on your sights longer than you would on a bullet fired rifle. ...

Re: Air Rifle .177 Paper Work

MJFOG,
At my age, life's really too short to be bothered by anything. Thanks for the best wishes.
Yep, it's not a Daisy Red Ryder popper.

There is one male PM spending the night and have manage to evade the hawk's attack.

Re: Air Rifle .177 Paper Work

After 20 plus years of shooting air rifles, from multi pumps, CO2, break barrel, The expense of buying several of them over the years added up to buying one PCP air rifle. I was never satisfied with them until I shot a PCP air rifle. There is hardly any recoil compared to break barrel spring powered...

Re: Air Rifle .177 Paper Work

I sat on my old roll around mechanics seat and I use my old aluminum ladder for a bench rest. I used my palm to support the fore stock. "no sand bags". The rifle is 29 inches long out of the box and it is about 10 to 11 pounds. Most of the weight is past center of the rifle towards the but stock. Th...

Air Rifle .177 Paper Work

Not having a functioning air rifle for a few years, I finally bought one. I mounted a small scope on top and sighted it in. After sighting it, here's what I am able to do with 12 pellets at 55 feet. That is as far as I can set my target in my back yard. The perch on top of my martin house is about 3...

Re: Lets talk sparrow traps in gourds

I think I'm gonna get me another .177 cal pellet rifle. The question is which one to get. There is one PM spending the night at my backyard. There are more hawks flying around my backyard than any other species of birds. I used to have 18 pairs and last year only one pair stayed. I've a few starling...

Re: Lets talk sparrow traps in gourds

When my Webley Raider pellet air rifle was functional, I used 10.6 gr pellets. I preferred this
over the .22 pellet or .22 bullet for it's size and weight. If there are any stray coming down, it
will not do damage to anything.

Re: 8 ROOM PM HOUSE IDEA

I would like to see this up in the air. if I decide to build, I will have to replace the two 12 room aluminum PM housing on two poles I built 18 years ago. It is not attracting PMs any more. I have friends that have barn looking plastic housing and they are full of PMS.I would like to see my design ...
