Fantastic! Glad they took to it. I've tried cricket flipping a number of times over the years and never had any success. I have to put crickets in each compartment in order for them to take. I've even tried using the B & B and they won't feed off of it either. Iy may just be the size of my "fly away...

Small or Short Legged Starlings

Must be the case of smaller starlings. I've got Troyer Horizontals attached to my T-14 with the WDC Tunnels on the gourds. Today I got a Starling pair going in an out of the opening. They are struggling coming out some, but get right in easily. The gourd is presently occupied by an ASY martin pair a...

billb,
I've had 10 since Feb. 10th. I'm at 15 now. They are slow coming back this year no doubt because of the cold weather. My site is 11 years old now.
They will be back soon enough.

Over the past 2 seasons I have replaced all of the porches on my super gourds with Troyer Tunnels. The tunnels cost about $5 each and are relatively easy to install. The Super Gourd with Troyer Tunnel will be SAFER (from owls and hawks), and drier. The only downside is a higher incidence of "wing e...

I've got 7. But, you should feel good your's are not here yet. They look very cold and I hope they get some food soon. It's supposed to warm to 54F today and even warmer tomorrow. You should be seeing yours soon as the weather warms up.

Congrats A! glad to see you back too. I had at least 1 martin in my housing yesterday when I came home. It flew out however, since my housing was still lowered. It's at ground level, but I put it up last night.

Steve, thanks for your observations. The weather outlook has been pretty bleak and the martins look so cold. Yeah, the rainy weather most likely has the most negative effect. Hopefully, with continued sunshine during this cold spell, the martins will hold out.

I fear for these birds the next 2 weeks, as the forecasts are not good for birds in general.

Dick,

I had one in a compartment when I came home tonight. I opened the back door to the house and he flew out. The martin house was still down at ground level! I fear for these guys because the weather forecasts show very cold temps for the next 2 weeks!

Emil, my doors in the T-14 are crescents. I have all my gourds converted for traps. (WDC's with the gulliotine doors). I've got some T-14 nest box traps, but the HS's know when this trap is in a compartment. They are just too smart. I'll even have some HS nest material attached to the traps. If I ca...

Just the HS's are bad. I don't have trouble with the Starlings since I have SREH's. My S & S Controller catches quite a few starlings as well. If I get enough ASY's back, they police the housing pretty well.

Hello Leroy. Welcome aboard! Which part of the country are you in?

Steve, I hope these birds head south for awhile. Were supposed to be having continuing freezing temps the next few days. These birds are real early this year.

Thanks Louise, I'm going to get the T-14 and gourds up this afternoon. I'll open up a few compartments. This is amazing, them coming in so early. That reminds me I need to order some Crickets today. It's supposed to be pretty cold this weekend.

When to Open Gourds and Cavities?

I know, I know, not the classic question again. I've been doing this awhile, but with this early activity I not sure. I ask myself every year and this will be my 11th season. I wondering if I should leave all the openings closed until my average adult return date, which is the 10th of Feb. or open t...

Jeff, I have an old PMCA shelter. Currently, I use a Supergourd with a large opening (Cutout to the size of a Troyer porched opening) and hang it from my B & B when I notice jumper activity. The gourd has worked great the last 2 seasons and was quick to put up and take down. The adults can see the f...
