Re: Flea and mite control

I put seven on the pine needles when I pre-nest. It has been a rainy week and maybe the seven is "dead", but so are any bugs that were on the needles I suppose. Seems to work. They build on top and besides the green leaves they put down also are cover. Mine like the white oak nearby BTW.

Re: PRE NEST MATERIAL

I use the southern pine needles with a little seven dust on them. i put in a little nest bowl but they change it to their own.

Gives them something to start in cause an empty cavity especially in a gourd is kinda "hard" imo.

Re: A big purple wave is on the way.

It is strange that the 5 TS that came in seveeral days ago, and are still here... but where are the PMs?

I did see a light chested colored swallow looking like a female barely able to fly going over the house this afternoon, flapping not gliding. Not a TS. Can my first scout this year be a female?

Re: Get those crickets ordered on time folks.

Scrambled eggs are easier. I put them in the gourds the scouts have chosen if no bugs are flying

Re: A big purple wave is on the way.

TS who came in as a group the other day but no PMs yet. The other cool summer birds are here also. Robbins, jays, brown chesters.

Wx has been goofy and I expect them any day.

Re: Gourd questions

I put plastic S&K entrances on my natural gourds that can't be eaten. They love a big natural gourd, and also I try to put the depression, if there is one. toward the back so they kinda settle down in there. IMO a level porch is best, but you have to drill the mounting hole straight if you mount on ...

Re: Kentucky Martin is back

There has been some really wet/bad weather here in the soggy south, but yesterday it broke. I put up a bunch of PM gourds, and this AM had 5 TS buzzing around and checking out the 1 1/2" hole wooden box housing I have (that was empty and still opened on the cleanout side. I pre-nested with some stra...

Re: Purple Martin and Blue Birds

I suggest getting some 1 1/2" hole "bluebird boxes", put them up where you can see them (I bet they could be on a post near the PM housing) and enjoy watching the Tree Swallows compete for the housing. I had 5 TS come in today as I was putting up PM gourds. The BBs have already been here all year. P...

Re: Question about starting a new colony on raw land

They like ponds that are wide open, live oak trees for the green leaves, and bugs.

Re: Placement of crescent opening

Flush with the bottom of a box? Then where does the nest material go? On my gourds, as well as the plastic Big Bo V2, the bottom of the crescent is about 1 1/2 or more above the bottom, so there is room for a nest bowl and the entrance isn't blocked.

Re: Gourd Seeds

I am turning 25 more natural gourds into ready to hang housing. This should fill out my colony at 60 gourds on 4 tee racks. Thus, I have a bunch of nice seeds. 2 year old gourds so they should be ready. Send me a PM and be patient. I will want you to send me a padded self addressed stamped envelope ...

Re: Bluebirds

While I have lotsa BB in the early spring, and all year, they have not taken to any of the houses I have put up for them. No problem though as the TS are happy for the cavity.

Re: S&K “Bo” Gourds

I use S&K "Big Bo V2" gourds when I don't have enough natural ones. They are popular gourds with the PMs. There are different openings available.

IMO the porch rivets need renewing each season upon cleanout.

So you want to grow your own PM gourds? To hang or sell, not that it matters if more housing gets put up.

Re: Disappointing visit to Griggsville IL

I was kinda distressed reading the start of this thread but it has ended well.

I wonder about the Capistrano Swallows, and also why PMS have to go all the way to Washington state instead of a lower latitude.

Is it food supply? I sure do like them eating my flying bugs.

Re: Pre nest materials

Thanks, and it will take more work than luck. I plan to expand the cavities with my new "no dangle" rod system that I employed after the spring disaster we had here. They will get straw, new porches / and, or rivets, and new paint. I also want to have crickets (or whatever) to put in the scout's gou...

Re: Pre nest materials

I use the pine needles that I pick up off my gravelrock drive, as they get driven over and that may soften them up some. I put a little seven on a handful of them, spread them out nice and smooth. They like having a nice base to work from and I think they also wick up moisture. They always add the g...

Re: Lawn mower

I have a lot of grass to mow also (airstrip) and the barnies are usually there with me. This miserable cold nasty spring there were no bugs to be had and I had scouts. I mowed the strip even though it didn't need it just to stir up bugs in the grass. I was amazed to see those B-52 size scout Martins...

Re: Question About Another Bird

That rectangular tail tells me it is probably a bank swallow. I had a bunch around my place feeding on flying insects all through September and into October. PMs and TS leave at the end of August, barnies a tad later. No idea where these "bank swallows" nest or roost but it is nice having air cover ...
