Ontario Purple Martins Arrive, May 17, 2020

That is so exciting to hear that northern latitude purple martin colonies are getting their new arrivals. What kind of housing do you provide for your purple martins? House vs. gourds? What kind of house and/or gourds? A picture would be so rewarding for other purple martin landlords interested in t...

Ed's idea of a temporary 1 3/8" is a perfect example of the KISS Principle - Keep It Simple Stupid. I over thought the restricted hole for years until I learned his solution. Easy to make, easy to apply and easy to remove when the job is done! The HOSP will enter the 1 3/8" hole with minimal hesitat...

HOSP Compartment Trapping Tips

The more committed HOSP are to one compartment, the more likely a good trap will catch them. A piece of their nesting material left sticking out of the entrance hole is an indication to the occupying HOSP that a competitor HOSP has invaded and the compartment (trap) must be investigated immediately....

HOSP Traps for T14

Option 4 is the best available for you. Buy a good trap to trap the HOSP, restrict the entrance hole to 1 3/8" so that purple martins cannot enter the trap, trap all HOSP (especially the male), humanely exterminate the HOSP discretely so your wife does not get upset, remove the trap and observe purp...

Identify nest

This topic concisely expresses the HOSP/EUST issue, "Starling and Sparrow control for new and wannabe landlords": https://www.purplemartin.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=36213 Many characteristics of the current nest in your picture looks like a European Starling's nest. Hopefully what you thought wa...

Re: CONLEY 2 HOLES ON MY HOUSE

Rob, That is so exciting to see purple martins at your site! You are on your way to a successful colony. Is your pole system one of the famous Ron Seekamp parallelogram pivot systems? I have always wanted to see one in action! How do you like it?! I would like to know when this video was filmed by K...

Red Tail Hawk

In my experience both as a purple martin landlord and a Quail Forever member that helps manage 300 acres for quail habitat, the Red-tailed hawks are more interested in a rabbit or field rat/mouse. The opposite is true of Sharp-shinned or Cooper's hawks. They primarily go after birds. If a Red-tailed...

Cold/Cool weather questions.

Paule, Your colony's growth and success is a testament to the multi-discipline approach to cold/cool weather conditions. In the Southeast martins overcrowding into single compartments to the point of suffocation and blocked entrances does not happen very often. So I cannot attest to that problem. Th...

Cold/Cool weather questions.

Paule, Sounds like you and I are the only landlords who have used a multi-discipline approach to cold weather - insulated/heated housing AND supplemental feeding.. I read the post you referenced about heating Trio houses. You had minimal losses this year and I want to commend you on your success. I ...

Kegger, Unfortunately, any entrance large enough to allow a purple martin to enter and exit is even easier for an English House Sparrow (really a Weaver Finch by categorization). The entrance which excludes a Purple Martin and allows HOSP is 1.25". This link is from the Sialis.org website, "Hole Siz...

Starling and Sparrow control for new and wannabe landlords

Brad, You said what I wanted to say for years but my writing is inadequate to express what you summarized so eloquently. Either be a responsible purple martin landlord or take down the housing and donate it to a dedicated, caring landlord. I have lost count of the abandoned purple martin housing tha...

Cold/Cool weather questions.

Every year the PMCA Forum hears from the MidWest, NorthEast and Atlantic Coast landlords struggling with early arrival purple martins. The solution always seems to be centered around supplemental feedings. How many of these landlords have adapted their housing to keep their purple martins warm in th...

Clinger Plate on Trio House Door

Keith, How easy can the Clinger Plate be applied to a Trio House Door? I would assume the round hole of an original Trio Door would have to be cut larger to accommodate the Clinger Plate. I know the Trio Door has to be enlarged to accept a Conley II Plate. Conley II Plates are available through the ...

Housing Insulation

Although this topic was started about gourds, I have insulated a Trio Grandma with outstanding success. I used 1/4" foam insulation on the inner surface of all outside walls, under each Dri-Nest and the attic ceiling. No further loss of purple martins, nestlings or eggs has occurred due to cold weat...

Lewis Modified Conley II Entrances vs. Round Entrances

No original Lewis Modified Conley II Entrance has been breached by starling so far. Many landlords have played around with their own variation to Conley II entrances with mixed re...

Plastic Gourds' Poor Insulation Against Cold Spells

I have heard all of the devastation caused by late cold snaps recently. I am so saddened by the loss of so many young nestlings and eggs by these cold snaps. I had similar losses like this current episode several years ago and investigated solutions from our northern latitude landlords. The most eff...
