Congratulations James!!! I am real happy for you, I was a little hard on you , when you started to get that "defeatist" attitude , It seems to me that, the people who struggle for years to attract PM's,never take them for granted, and make excellent landlords!!!

Laura, don't give up on the BBs! This year my BBs 1st clutch fledged on the day of a massive cold front that brought cold & rain, all perished. The pair instantly rebuilt and started #2, the house was also on a fence and coons raided it. I moved the house to a pole and made a stovepipe baffle with s...

You may still have a chance, I am in C. IN, and have many new subbies showing up. Even if you don't get any takers this year, leave your housing up and open until all the PM's have migrated South. They will be looking for places to live next year when they return Don't ever let trash birds get estab...

Dave, I can tell you "why they are here", some idiot that loved Shakespeare, and wanted all the birds mentioned in his writings, brought them here. And since then, they have done nothing but upset the balance that you speak of. EUST & HOSP in the New World is a man-made problem, so it must have a man...

I have guards on all my poles, but I also have a zero tolerance policy for racoons that raid my feeders. I don't like killing nuisance coons in the summer, but the local Turkey Vultures love me for it. I have them trained to a feeding area downwind of my house. I will also take fresh roadkills from ...

Sully, the Hoosier HOWR's must have a meanstreak this year, I had one pierce and eject 4 BB eggs, then it pierced 1 PM egg, and launched a baby PM out of a gourd(it survived, glad I'm doing checks) I have always read of this behavior, but not experienced it til this year. Amazing how such a tiny bird...

It sounds like you have either a House Wren or House Sparrow, piercing and ejecting eggs and babies. If the PM's are harassed enough, by whatever is attacking the nest, they may abandon it.

Yeah, it's quite a conundrum. James I believe you are right, about it being a problem wren, I have had the same set-up, of many houses offered, for years. This is the 1st HOWR massacre I have experienced., But, Icline I also see the merits of not having them around at all. Like you, I enjoy, immense...

Louise, you can use "wrenegade" all you want :),add it to the forum vernacular Doug, you are right about them being sneaky, I saw the wren from a distance and went as fast as I could to scare it away, it had already pierced and dumped 1 egg, and threw a baby out(which did survive). It was there, the...

Louise, I currently offer 3 wren houses in a brushy area adjacent to my PMs, but the wren crossed the road to the BB house on the other side of the barn, then came back and got after the PMs. I have always loved the wrens, but have never had this experience with one before. My plan now is to put all...

Wren wreaking havoc! any suggestions

3 days ago I noticed my BB's hanging around a different box than the one they had eggs in, I thought it was weird, so I went to check, and I saw the wren in their box. It had pierced all 4 eggs, and tossed them. Last evening I saw a tiny bird on my rack and immediately got worried. I did a walk arou...

Dan, it is really cool to hear of your great success with hosting PMs. Last year I had 2 sy pairs restart my colony after a brush with success in '08. This year so far, there are 7 active nests in my 26 cavities offered. I have also seen an influx of sy's over the past week, I am hoping they settle ...

Use lots of decoys, and move them around, try to be out there early morning and late evening, when attacks are most likely. One of the best methods of using decoys, is to use tall bamboo in a 5 gal. bucket of cement, put a cross perch on the top with decoys, move the buckets around often.(I dont reme...

Mark, you should consider enlarging the compartments on your house, and hanging gourds underneath it. Keep after the sparrows and shoot everyone that ever lands on your housing. Trap them year round. Don't give up, it took me 10 years to attract PM's, my learning curve was finding the forum. Search ...

I used to give a yearly donation to a local rehabber, when I discovered they wasted time and resources saving Starlings, I quit giving and told them why. Ray is right, a recent study proved the bees are affected by a certain chemical insecticide used in seed coatings for monoculture farming. Many nations have already banned the chemical,I hope the US will follow. No doubt Matt, thats a great idea, I am definitely a firm believer in SREH. You pretty much cut the invasive problem in half when using them, I realize ther are breeches, but overall they are game changers.
I still shoot and trap every Starling I can though.
