Egg Shells
Greetings all, I've been on to other things while winter has set in and my purple martins are away basking in there tropical vacations. However, I'm beginning to think about the things I need to do in preparation for my martins and have a question. I have been trying to get martins for 13 years and ...

Steve, I am SO impressed with your incredible martin colony. WOW! You have so many martins. I bet the sound of them is immense. I hope that I will eventually have a large colony like that. I miss my martins already. They stop by periodically during the day but never stay long. I can't wait until nex...

That is such a good question. I've been trying to attract pm's since 1995. This year I finally had a pair nest. I had actually given up so that I would not feel that dreaded disappointment. However, I did notice that we had moved out on a pasture with no trees. This year our trees (shelterbelt) has ...

Here are a couple photos of my pm houses I built. I was not able to use the Filename and browse function. I wonder if my photos were too large and they would not upload. I will try enter the urls. http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b8d631b3127ccec4816602163000000040O08AbN2bVu4csge3nwg/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D5...

John, Very interesting. Glad your little tykes fledged successfully. I'm surprised martins sit in trees. I've tried to see where mine would sit and could never see them go into any of our trees. I know they were there somewhere as when I would come out of the house they came out from somewhere and g...

Astrid, great story. In reading your posts I assumed you were from Germany. Do you miss Europe? I laughed out loud hearing your reasoning for putting up your first marin house. ha ha. Doesn't take much to attract them...does it? How nice that you were able to attract PM's in your first year. Thank y...

Roosting Sites...Power Lines
What makes a roosting site? I wish I knew where there was a roosting site in ND. I overheard a conversation a few weeks ago. It went something like this. Two gentlemen were talking and one said: "Did you get any this year? The other said no, I don't have any powerlines so I will never get any purple...

I consider myself a first year landlord in this location so I will start. I've always been interested in wildlife, even as a youngster. I've been racking my brain trying to remember exactly how I got started with purple martins. I am an avid gardener with 3 to 4 acres in gardens, paths and benches. ...

Donnie, Yes, I am from North Dakota. I can't figure out how to add my state below my user name. I'm surprised that you have martin colonies 1/2 mile away and can't attract any to your houses. That's really bizarre. I hope you will get them next year too. I know what it's like to wait...and wait...an...

Thank you all for the wonderful welcome. I do have questions and will send them under a separate post when I have a little more time. I can not WAIT until next year. I am hoping to get quite a few more martins. I'm thankful for the pair that finally found my site worthy of nesting. It will now (hope...

Greetings, I am so thrilled to be a member of this forum again. I had been a member quite awhile ago when the forum was in a different format. Here is a little information about myself. When I lived in the city I had a very nice colony of purple martins. I was young, put up several houses and they c...
