Ha ha...the looks on their faces is priceless. What great photographs.

I am having a lot of fighting going on here as well. I almost ran out a couple times and stopped some serious fights that took the two to the ground.

Thank you for sharing your photos.

Delma,

I am so happy for you. It was a long time in coming that you finally have martins nesting in your housing.

Hopefully, the scissortail will find a new perch before the martins eggs hatch and they become more aggressive.

Enjoy your coffee and bird watching.

Adam, Your house looks very nice. Good job! It appears from your descriptions that you have your founding pair of martins. You will have to watch them in the mornings to see if they are bringing in nesting material. That will more or less seal the deal. Good luck with your martins. I hope you get a ...

Thank you all for your wonderful messages. I am so happy I am beyond words. I did order more gourds and cannot wait until they arrive. While speaking to the very nice gentleman on the phone he told me about a Dakota martin organization and an upcoming meeting. It is about a 5 hour drive, but I might...

Emil, I had that happen to me last year as well that I found a cap on the ground after a wind storm. I kept hearing all kinds of squawking and finally figured out what the problem was. Suzanne, I do know that the birds here will not nest in the houses I had up but fill up the gourds real quick. I've...

Awwww what a love hate relationship I have at fledgling time. I love to see them flying around, landing on their keesters and looking so awkward. But I hate knowing the season is almost over once they begin fledgling.

Enjoy those little tykes.

I sure hope with all the lookie loos you have had this year that some of them will bring their young by and show them what a beautiful place you have. I seen that happen here last year where the parents seemed to bring their youngsters by my place. You may still have a chance until the end of June. ...

Thank you all for your words of encouragement. I have plenty room on my racks for gourds as I have only been buying a few a year. I am going to order some tomorrow. This is insane. I did not think there were that many birds around here. They do not seem to leave their gourds I think they fear someon...

Colony Explosion

My little colony is exploding with martins. I am astounded at the number of birds that keep arriving. I have 29 gourds and from watching I believe every single one of them are full. I am so worried that some of the birds here do not have a gourd to spend the night in. I will be up late tonight watch...

If possible I would add another house/or gourd rack. I noticed initially I had one martin run off all other martins on their gourd rack. Now there are so many birds that no ONE male can defend an entire house or gourd rack.

Sherrie,

That is incredible. I wonder if they are done hatching now or if you will have more youngsters. Holy smokes that would be awful to lay that many unhatched eggs. OUCH. ha ha

Kathy, Your post made me chuckle. I cannot wait to hear the chaos of the SY birds show up at my site. I only have a few more gourds left this year. I am wishing now I had bought a few more gourds this year as I hope I have room for some subbies. All the birds at my site are ASY and they just keep sl...

I do not close any of my unoccupied gourds/housing. With all the martin activity I have not had anything try nesting. I do have troubles before the martins arrive and I trap them immediately. But I have never had anything try nesting with all the martin activity. Besides, what if another pair show u...

I did not find that the decoys attracted martins. In fact my martins would fight with the decoys so I eventually took them down. However, if I had hawk attacks I would place them back up in hopes the hawk would try to grab a sitting decoy over my martins. I answered your tree swallow question in ano...

I have quite a few tree swallow nest boxes 50 to 100 ft away from my martins houses. They use the martin perches until most of my martin housing is filled then there is too much activity for them and I have not had a problem. I think you should be fine as long as they are not nesting in your martin ...

I don't have eggs yet. However, I posted that my martins were slowly trickling in but no nest building was happening. Just after I typed that and went out to watch them they began to FRANTICALLY build their nests. I've never seen them work so fast. I'm happy but yet a bit sad as the season will FLY ...

Jose, that is wonderful. How can you see their nests? I wish I knew more about chimney swifts. We do not have a chimney so I've never really taken the time to read about them except for what people say here on the forum.

How fun! Good luck with them.

Danno, That is awesome. Yes, I posted this weekend that my birds came back, but non of them were bringing in nesting material yet. Yesterday morning they are working so hard and fast that I worried my season will be all over at once. Did you get a lot of SY birds? I am assuming those are the ones wi...

Nikki,

Great idea about the cake pan cover for your mealworms. I built a bed and breakfast where I keep my egg shells and throw in my mealworms but the robins are eating them all. I like your idea and may need to craft one as well.

Thank you for posting.
