Re: Has any one experience having a nest with chicks abandoned by parents?

Hi Brent,
You could assist by placing water soaked crickets on the porches. The young parents may feed these youngsters the crickets for rehydration.

Re: Post fledge observations/questions

Hi DuckCamp,
All of what you have observed is normal martin parenting and fledgling activities. No reason to worry about the youngsters or parents.

Re: Successful Year

Congrats Bill. I too had a good season. Like flyin-lowe I also had a few killdeer early alarms system with the hawks in the area to allow my martins to get to safety quickly.

This is good news Travis,
If they have moved on by themsleves, it indicates that natural instinct kicked in and they are well on their way to a new life.

Re: Advice Please!!

At this time I would try to contact an avian rehabilitator in your state and ask for their advice. If you are near a college or University that has an animal rehab program, (animal sciences department) try to contact them for assistance.

Re: Timing on removing predator guards and cleaning vacated cavities

I do the same as flyin-lowe. One to two weeks after the last departure, I take everything down for a good cleaning and stoarge for the winter.

Re: Advice Please!!

If you are hand feeding them, you need to do so on a regular basis and often. I recommend soaking the meal worms in pedialyte as it will aid the nestlings in rehydration and electrolytes. If you know where the nestlings came from and the parents are still in the cavity, the parents will do a much be...

Re: New to site, questions...

Hi EC,
I suggest reading all you can in the "Purple Martin Main Website" section on the head tab "Purple Martins" then pull down to "Attracting" section. This info will assist you in getting a martin colony started.

Re: Martin Watch Data and Season Totals

Hi Evan, Here are two solutions to your gnat problem by two very knowledgable purple martin people. First from Louise Chambers " Look for absorbine jr fly control products, often sold for horses - use on the outside of the housing only. Ultrathon 3M product lasts longer per treatment if you can find...

Mentees having a good year in Iowa.

This season has been a huge success for many of my wannabe landlord mentees. Everyone one of my mentees that were wating for the magic season, just had their prayers and hard work answered. The first year landlords who get their first successful pair or two are on cloud niine. I let them know and un...

Re: Fantastic year with huge increases!

Hi Travis,
Congrats on the jump in numbers. Across the US I have heard there was a general increase in numbers at colonies. My colony went from 54 pair to 60 pair this year.

Re: Had Martins again but no breeding. Looking for some advice

Hi MY FYN, It can take years before a martin pair might make a nest and have nestlings. I waited 6 years until my first pair, other landlords wait even longer. I suggest going on this website under the "Purple Martins" heading and pull down to "attracting". There you will see a great deal of info on...

Re: Moving the Hatchlings

As for the house sparrows, I advise shooting and trapping then euthenize the sparrow. Nest pulling will only infuriate the sparrow and cause sparrow revenge on the martins and their babies.

Re: Moving the Hatchlings

If the nestlings are old enough they may be doing this on their own. Once hatchling start poking their heads out the entrances for food, the next step is they can start exploring compartments to each side. This is nothing to be alarmed about. But, if they are pink little babies and you are sure the ...

1 inch pvc elbows will not hurt the gourds. Simply plug the holes with swimming pool noodle foam pieces in the early part of the season when they arrive in your area.

Re: Establishing a colony 🙏

Hi Mike,
Congrats on starting your new colony. The only suggestion I have would be to read as much information as you can about martins and how to best take care of them. Everything you need to know can be found on this website; look in the links section and FAQ section. Best of luck my friend.

Water soaking crickets for babies during the heat

Hi everyone, To assist the young babies in beating the heat wave, I suggest soaking your crickets in water first. The parents will readily feed these soaked water crickets to their young. The add moisture will assist in keep the babies hydrated. Normally, the insects that are naturally foraged by pa...

Re: Vent holes

I put in 1 inch PVC elbows 2/3rds the way up from the back of the gourd. Face the elbow openings downward. In the cold spring when they arrive, I simply use pieces of swimming pool noodles to plug the openings of the PVC elbows. Once it warms back up, pull the plugs.
