Re: Purple Martin Housing Location

Hi jasolhe, The location of the planned martin house should work just fine. Bad that the trees went down, but great for the martins in the future. Do you have any martin colonies nearby ? If you do, you have a good chance of starting a new colony at your location. I'm suprised that I have not seen y...

Re: Unusual season

Hi BANG,
This season has seen some later than normal migration south, but nothing to fret about. They will move on in their own time. Best of luck my friend.

Hi Ladybug,
My short and sweet answer is Conley 2. I've had the Conley II entrances for 15 years and have never had a starling get in.

Re: Thoughts on Fledging Age

Hi Tim, Most all my babies fledge at about 30 days. Maybe it is a second brood, but that wouldn't make sense with an SY pair. I'm as confused as you on this one. I still have two nests that need the babies to fledge and it also seems like they have been around longer than 30 days. I do know that the...

Re: New Idea to Control House Sparrows

Thank you for this information, but there are some flaws in the guys understanding of sparrow behavior. If sparrow nests are removed or their eggs broken, the sparrow will have what is called sparrow revenge and enter nearby compartments that have martin eggs and destroy those eggs. This advice from...

Re: Martins drinking.

Purple Martin will not drink from a bird bath or small source of water. They only drink while in flight.

Re: Martins in Central Virginia

Hi cervey, During the day near the end of the season it is very common for martins to be out teaching their young how to catch bugs. They are gone almost the entire day and then slip back to their housing at the end of the day. They also form small local roosts in surronding areas. Another thing tha...

Re: Unsuccessful landlord, looking for encouragement

I was in the same situation as flyin lowe with ideal conditions to attract martins and it also took me 6 years to attract my first nesting pair. But, your visitors are a great first step that gives good hope for next years season. The migrators are peeking at possible housing for next year. The SY y...

Re: put up new house now or wait?

The only reason to possibly put the house up in Ohio would be to maybe attract newly hatched martin from this year that will be migrating down south to Brazil in the next few weeks. There is no need to paint the interiors black. It is completely up to you if you wish to put up the house now. If it w...

Re: Male Martin feeding Babies

Call me crazy for doing what I do, but I feel it aids the lone females in feeding the remaining youngsters. I soak my frozen crickets in water until they are thawed, then put a small handful on each compartment porch in which there is a lone female feeding their youngster when close to fledging.

Hi Peter,
A great informational section on tree swallows and bluebirds can be found right on this website. Click on Purple Martin Website, hold cursor over Purple Martins, pull down to competitors, over to Native. At the bottom on the Native page is a download on Tree Swallow Emergency.

Re: Feeding Eggs

Hi Sue, I have never boiled eggs and chopped them up for my martins. I have only scrambled my eggs without using oil. I scramble the eggs and chop them up in the pan using a pastry cutter. Then, I clean the inside of the eggs shells under a little running water and microwave them for 1 minute and th...

Re: Rescued lone 16-day old jumper, rest of colony left (seeking advice)

Good advice from GHB. It is extremely difficult to hand feed babies on a regualr and frequent schedule and then hope that they will learn on their own after release. The sad fact is that these babies need a new adoptive parent pair in a nearby colony. Just be sure that the original parents are indee...

Hi Brent,
You could assist by placing water soaked crickets on the porches. The young parents may feed these youngsters the crickets for rehydration.

Congrats Bill. I too had a good season. Like flyin-lowe I also had a few killdeer early alarms system with the hawks in the area to allow my martins to get to safety quickly.
