Re: House is up, when to open doors?

Anthony, the purple martins were first seen on 4/29/2016 in our backyard (central OKC). I didn't know if they would be earlier this year since last year was their first time nesting at our site? Thanks for the tip though. I'm running to the window at every black bird flying over the house!! ...

Re: New member looking for advice

from the looks of the pic's I would say a very good place to attract martins, don't worry about the jet ski it won't bother the martins Offer both gourds & PM Housing if you can, I am sure there will be a lot of PM Land Lords from Missouri that will give you info. Go to the pmca home page click on s...

Re: Swinging gourds

Whippy,
Later as I added tunnels to my Supergourds & HZ Troyers I did attach a wire from the front of the gourd to the rear behind the gourd to the guide wire which did stabilize the gourd more . I hope this gives you some Ideas as what to do and help you

Re: Swinging gourds

Whippy, For many many years I had a Lone Star Gourd Rack with the gourds attached with a wire running thru them, they would swing a lot but the martins never minded that, my main concern was the eggs, I never lost any due to the swinging gourds, I had this rack up for 20 yr's. I added some HZ Troyer...

Re: Bedding

Does anyone put bedding in houses before PM's arrive? Or, do you let them gather their own? What kind of Housing do you have?? do you have nest boxes??? I always cut up pine straw and form a bowl and pre-nest every cavity & every Gourd every year It keeps the martins safe not having to look for Nes...

Re: Asking experts: What do I do?

Hi Okie, IMO , If you can monitor your traps constantly I would keep all of them working for you (Your Martins will love you for it) even if you catch a pm it won't scare him off, just as long as you get him out and release him easily he will come back I am constantly around all my housing/and gourd...

Re: Hawk Problems already here in Grand Prairie, Texas

If you google image in purple martin owl cage for pics you will find some good ideas on how to construct the cage. I have also heard of landlords that have hawk problems to sit a scarecrow in a lawn chair and place it in or near the colony, moving the chair every other day. In extreme cases I have ...

Re: Hawk Problems already here in Grand Prairie, Texas

I hear you KC. Hope you're able to figure out a plan. I cannot be of help as I have put off cages but know I should before my satellite and home site grows any larger. I have followed past threads pretty closely. When I do build cages I plan to figure out a way to attach cage to pole whereby the ca...
