Re: Discouraged in Newton , North Carolina.
I haven't given up and appreciate the encouraging comments. As a teenager growing up in Southern Alabama my neighbor gave me a twelve room wooden house and 12 pairs of purple Martin's. Let me clarify. His site was being overgrown by trees. He asked me if I would put the house in my open back yard and...

Discouraged in Newton , North Carolina.
Bought a beautiful Lonestar gourd rack and pole. With 10 excluded ll gourds, 1 supergourd with excluded and 5 natural gourds that I fitted with excluded plates. Also reworked an old M12 and now it is a M6 with excluded holes. Put everything up in early April. No starling or sparrows. Play the dawnso...

Re: Trio Housing & Splayed Legs
I put a piece of inexpensive indoor carpet in my metal house cut to 5.5 inches and it seems to work great.

Re: Moving soon and need to liquidate.

Re: The awful has happened...daggone starlings!
I had crescent entrance holes on my gourds several years ago and had same problem. Re- worked all my gourds with Excluder plates from PMCA and never had problem again. I am trying to start a new colony at my new home and purchased the new Excluder ll plastic gourds and a few natural gourds with the ...

Re: Nest checks are absolutely critical!!
There is a very large colony about 3 miles from my location. Its has been around a long time. Over 100 gourds. They have converted almost all to Supergourds. A few smaller scattered around. None that I know of closer than 3 miles.

Re: Nest checks are absolutely critical!!
Unfortunately my friend passed away that winter and the family had no interest in Purple Martin's and got rid of all his gourds and Martin houses and sold the property. He did a wonderful job for over 22 yrs with the Martin's. I tried at my old house to attract Martin's but too many trees. My new ho...

Nest checks are absolutely critical!!
Several years ago my friend here in Newton NC had a huge colony of over a hundred pairs. In late May of 2014 we had a freak cold spell for 3 or 4 days. As the spell ended he noticed his Martin's were acting strange. Not going in and out of the gourds as usual. Perching on the racks. He decided to im...

Re: Can hawks make purple martins shun a house they used for years?
This is the perfect argument for why the new supergourds are the perfect Martin Housing. With the excluder entrance holes and guards it is impossible for a hawk to reach in and remove a Martin. Also the gourds move when the hawk lands on it increasing the difficulty. The entrance hole also eliminate...
