Re: Martin "wiggle" in flight.

Interesting responses. I always thought it was specific to the martins since I've never saw that maneuver with others birds. but, of course, I never watched others as closely.

Re: Look for capped eggs

Nest checks are important and I've been checking every 4-5 days. However, sadly today, I discovered a capped egg that must have been capped the day I did the nest check or very soon after. Unless you check every day it is almost impossible to avoid, I guess. I felt so bad about it. The day I checked...

Re: 7th Nest Check

I'm kind of in the same situation since I have one compartment that will be nearing fledging while the others are still days away. I plan on plugging the hole and not looking in after the 22nd day for this particular compartment while I check the other compartments. I was told (through this forum) t...

Martin "wiggle" in flight.

Hi everyone,

I've always been amused and astounded by the aerial aerobics that our beautiful martins display. One little movement that seems to be displayed only by the martin in flight is the "wiggle". I know you've seen it, too. Do you know why they do it? Thanks.

More leaves than last year...why?

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share this observation of the martins. Last year the martins brought in some leaves but this year, even after the eggs have been laid, they continue to bring in lots of leaves. During the last nest check I had to remove some from around the tray and some that fell on th...

Egg observation...interesting

Hi all, Today I had a nest check and noticed, in one nest, an egg that seemed to be moved away from the others. I left it alone thinking it may be one that will be discarded by the parent birds. I've seen this before but there was another interesting find in one other nest that was puzzling to me. T...

Re: 6th Nest Check - old landlords, check my projections

Hi Mike, Lots happening in Palm City. I started to use the wheel this year and it's proven to be exact on my first hatchlings. I'm on my 5th nest check and have 6 young and 85 eggs. I'm going bird crazy with all of my attention on the martins. I have a pair of blue birds who just fledged 5 beautiful...

Thanks Toy! I'm relieved to report that I spotted him coming out of the compartment after she arrived. Stayed out until dark so I can see what was happening. Sooooo happy.

What happens if the male martin dies?

Hi everyone, The other day I found feathers not far from my martin houses. It appeared to me that of a male martin. Right now, I have a nest of 4 nestlings and 2 eggs. I haven't seen the male and may be I'm just being a little overly concerned but what if it was him that was preyed on. Does the fema...

Re: Dealing with neighbors while trapping sparrows

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement. I will continue to do what's best for the blue birds and martins. I had 5 blue birds fledge yesterday and, on my last martin nest check day before yesterday, I counted 63 eggs total but sure there will be more. I am so protective of the birds and want to liv...

Dealing with neighbors while trapping sparrows

Hi everyone, I bought a repeating HOSP trap from PMCA and it works great. My problem now is that I noticed that my neighbor, who I asked to take down her feeders that were attracting many HOSP, has not been so polite to me after I starting using the trap. Before I bought and started using the trap I...

Re: Bluebird question

Do you have a pole guard to help prevent snake predation? Sounds like a snake to me especially if the nest was not disturbed.

Re: So upset! And trap question

Lisa, I'm sorry to hear this. I am so concerned about this happening to one of the birds here. I have sparrows that fly from one location right over my houses to a cattle field and many stop on the martin perches lurking. I have to go out and chase them away. I did buy a PMCA Repeating Bait Trap and...

Re: When to expect nest building?

Hi and welcome. My martins began to arrive on January 31st when I noticed an ASY male hanging around. Since then I have two houses full of martins. On March 21st I saw some martins bringing in nest materials. Since then, though, I haven't seen much activity. From last year's experience, too, I would...

Re: Hawk attack

Hi Kathy, Just got back from Walmart with the boat/air horn. I did get the biggest one they had. It was about 10 dollars. I hope it's big enough. It's the Shoreline Marin Horn 8 oz. That was the largest they had. I do have the universal sparrow trap. I guess that I'll have to buy an air rifle. I cop...

Re: Hawk attack

Thanks Kathy and Louise, I will go buy a boat/air horn tomorrow. I live in a rural area and there are trees all around but at a distance. My houses are in my back yard that is open with no trees (as the martins like it). The distant trees are a problem but there is nothing I can do about them since ...

Hawk attack

Hi every one, This is an old topic I know but I wanted to share that I had 2 hawk attacks today. The first one was this morning and he did take one of the ASY males that was sitting on the house porch and the other was early afternoon when he took a female on the fly (I ran and clapped and she was r...
