Re: Maxed OUT!!

This forum should be a place people can come for information, etc.. and not have to worry about someone judging them for how they handle there colony.

Re: Maxed OUT!!

<t>Interesting philosophy. After years of improvements to martin husbandry such as expanded cavities, various gourds designs and improved martin houses, predator guards, attraction techniques and devices, starling resistant entrances and many efforts to grow the martin population in areas experienc...

Re: Maxed OUT!!

To each his/her own. I do nest checks once every week or so give or take when I have time and weather cooperates. If I see an insect or mite problem, I take care of it. I walk around my gourd rack every day when I get home to look for anything suspicious and I've gotten rid of 4 sparrows and 2 starl...

Definitely leave it up until season is over. Allow other young to see it

Re: Beware the Buffalo Gnats

I live near Lawrence where the flooding hasn't been as big of an issue. Hope I don't have to deal with this. Eggs have just started hatching.

Re: First time landlord

Don't get discouraged. It took me three years to get an established colony even though I had "visitors" each year. If this is the first year with your housing up and you had "visitors", you will likely get them next year. Especially with a large colony close by.

Re: Maxed OUT!!

I LOVE the Gemini rack. That 3" square pole is the key for me living in Kansas with our wind

Re: Maxed OUT!!

Appreciate it. I've had a colony since 2015 and grew up around colonies. This may not go well on this site, but I do not do nest replacements. I know a lot of people do and I know a lot of people don't. Probably a touchy subject. I love having Martin's around and I will eliminate sparrows and starli...

Maxed OUT!!

Did my first nest check over the weekend and good lord I'm maxed out. Have a Gemini rack with 17 Bo11+ gourds. Also have an old crappy barn on the other side of the yard that the starlings try and nest in before I take them out. All 17 gourds have a nest and there is even a nest in the barn. 71 eggs...

Re: Only so much I can do

Sparrows and starlings are very spooky for sure. As soon as I step outside, they are gone. Smart little parentless

Only so much I can do

I have about 13 pairs this year in my Gemini rack. I have an old barn that some have nested in before also. Having a bit of a sparrow/starling issue this year. More so in the barn than the Gemini rack. My problem is I work a full time job. I've "eliminated" a couple sparrows and a couple starlings a...

Re: Two eggs on ground

Now four on the ground over about 3-5 days. They are from different sides of my Gemini gourd rack (17 gourds). I would think (maybe wrongly) that if this was a sparrow, it would all be from the nest it’s trying to take over and all be on the same side of the rack? Makes me think they are either bad ...

Two eggs on ground

Question. I’m on my fourth year and have never had a huge sparrow problem. Usually have a pair of two that give me fits until I can shoot them. Same thing happening this year, but haven’t had success in shooting them yet. I had a broken egg on the ground this morning and one this afternoon. I have n...

Re: Wind question?

Weather here in Kansas has been absolutely nuts. I have a Gemini with 3" square pole and I lower it about 1/3 of the way when weather looks bad. I've had it lowered that much for days now and they don't seem to care at all. I think you will be fine lowering it some, especially once you have an estab...

Sitting in Rain

Martins sure must love sitting in the rain?. I have approximately 28 so far. It is absolutely pouring at my place, and I count 22 just sitting on my Gemini rack in the rain. Plenty of room in gourds, but nope. So weird, but normal I guess?

Re: I’m growing in numbers

Same here. I had 16 Martins last year and to date this year, I have seen 24. Curious how many nests I end up with as they are building now.

Re: Gourds/rain/leaking

I don't do any pre nesting material. Have never had an issue. So far this year I have 20 Martins and they are building nests as I type this. I never thought about the area between the gourd and the porch leaking. Hmmm I might put a little caulk there even though wetness hasn't been much of an issue ...

I have tunnels with porches on my gourds, so I think the entrance probably stays pretty dry. Again, thanks for the info!

Re: Gourds/rain/leaking

Excellent. I have tubing like that as well, but I didn't use any caulk last year. Been really rainy this year so I think I may use a little caulk. Glad someone else had some info on this. Much appreciated. They are just starting next building here in Kansas, so I should be able to get them caulked b...
