Re: Dispatching European Sparrows

Pellet gun or trap? I live in the country and have used my 20 gauge before. Probably for me is getting a shot before he is gone.

Re: avoiding house sparrow revenge

Ordered a gourd trap. I haven't been able to kill the solo male I have so I'm trying an in gourd trap. Should be here in a week. Hope that's quick enough. They have a nest built as of yesterday. No eggs yet. Have 8 Martins with no nests yet

Re: Dispatching European Sparrows

I aborted this plan as I believe the Martins have started staying overnight. Disturbing them might be bad idea. Back to the drawing board

Re: Dispatching European Sparrows

Came home to the sparrow nest rebuilt in one of my 8 gourds. Have 6-8 Martins who haven't really started building. They have paid no attention to the gourd with the Sparrows. I have no traps and the gourd faces opposite of where I can hide and get a good shot. Plan B. Remember reading about this on ...

Re: Dispatching European Sparrows

I'm worried by the time I can get the trap here, it may be too late. Maybe not. So frustrating. I just know if I don't get him, he's going to attack the Martin eggs when that time comes. Having a job is sure getting in the way. Haha

Re: Dispatching European Sparrows

I've got a male sparrow I'm struggling to dispatch of. I've got 6-10 Martins just at the beginning stage of building nests. Damn sparrow wants to build in gourds as well. They pay no attention to the my repeating trap. He gets so spooked, I can't get a good crap with my pellet gun. I may have to res...

Re: Temps, Rain, Wind, Feeding question

No feeding Saturday. Sun came out this afternoon for a couple hours with temps around 56 degrees. Tomorrow, 60 degrees with 20-25 mph winds. Hope they feed tomorrow. Wings look a little droopy but they are still flying around some. I attempted to throw crickets for about 20min but I got no response.

Re: Possable 10 Inches Of Snow

Lots of snow in Western, Ks. I'm in eastern, Kansas. Decent feeding Friday afternoon, Rain all day yesterday and this morning. Sun came out for a couple hours this afternoon with temps around 55. Hoping mine got a snack in. Wings look a little droopy. Still flying around some and wouldn't eat cricke...

Re: Temps, Rain, Wind, Feeding question

Thank you so much for the response. Hoping they have a decent feeding day Sunday. I know they did on Friday so today (Saturday) is the first day without. Monday forecast changed to 54 degrees but rain should be gone

Re: What made this nest?

Whatever it was must have found a better place because they never came back. Two Purple Martin pairs here now. Weather crumby today (50 and breezy) but it was 70 yesterday and 62 tomorrow.

Re: Supplemental feeding & Purple Martins

I'm a little bit of a worrier so this helps. 51 degrees today and 15mph winds. However, yesterday it was 70 and tomorrow it will be 62 so I won't worry about today. Second year with Martins so I want to make sure all goes well

Re: What made this nest?

I've dealt with sparrows and wrens. I have a wren on my place but they usually nests elsewhere. I was sure thinking chickadee. I was a little worried this would deter off my Martins since I'm really just getting my colony up and going, so wasn't sure what to so with it since it was just starting to ...

What made this nest?

On my third year of Martins. Had two pairs last year. Just started seeing some around a couple days ago so I opened some of the gourds up. Found this neat this morning. I have never seen a nest like this. I have 4 bluebird houses that are usually occupied on my 10 acres. Is this a chickadee nest? Hm...
