Re: How Many Decoys Should I Utilize For an Attraction Aid?

Birdbrain, i will use decoys on a satelite location. Seems to me they will be efective during a hawk attack. Some folks put them on the hose clamp ends to bounce around and attract the attack. I plan on using mine to attract the martins and when they arrive and martins seem to distrust them ill take...

Re: Help with new housing

TravisF, Sounds like the ASY pair recruited the other pairs, your situation was like mine the first year. One ASY pair at first, other martins followed. Of the 6 cavities in the house, 4 were taken, and near by I had 4 excluder gourds...one pair chose a gourd. The next year the martins went to the h...

Man, well good! I feel better about those martins chances. Very nice job on that trap. I think you down played your skills! You put it together quick. Best i did was 4 at once, after weeks of trying.
The martins will thank you!

It's a rocket box bat house. It's been occupied for 3 years now. They're a lot of fun to watch. They arrive about the same time as martins.
There are alot to choose from, i think ill try the flat type that hugs the house...will put it on my chimney!

Re: New to Martins and Forum....

Ill second the sevin dust, does the job. Some folks dont and rely on nest replacements, some folks do but only after seeing mites. I personally believe prevention is the way to win, like cool whips i put in a bit just before the birds arrive to take care of it right off. We have lots of humidity her...

Re: Out with the rat birds ,in with the martins! New beginnings

Your hearts in the right place and I completely understand, but without an active elimination program...dont see how to win against them. do what you can, maybe with new management they will help you in this. The martins can defend the nest if they have learned to stay behind while one is out feedin...

Looks like quite a set, good work on the modifications. Be good to see the martins flying around them again. I think you and the martins will reap the benfits of your work.

Re: New to Martins and Forum....

T-bird, As far as the rebar i used 5, two in the bottom and three on the sides. Ones in the bottom straight up, 3 on the sides were at an angle. The ones on the side almost intersect or cross each other in the hole. One i drove into the side about 6 inches from the bottom, others are higher but none...

Re: New to Martins and Forum....

I used 2 foot lengths of regular rebar. Surprisingly easy to cut. Pounded them in...not fun in a deep hole so used a board to press the ones on the sides in about half way so that the ends are extending into the hole. Ones on the bottom was easy. Put a few inches of gravel in the bottom for drainage...

Its going to be exciting for you, all the time, $$ and effort in the house. Its a lot of fun preparing. When your all ready to set up, house has arrived and all, please ask any questions; when it comes to the amount of cement, depth of the hole, even orientation of the house (what I mean by that is:...

Re: New to Martins and Forum....

T-bird,
If at all possible avoid putting up the round house. its a magnet for every other bird you do not want near a martin house. It won't assist you in attracting martins. just a suggestion.
