Re: ASY Male arrived in central PA

It indeed happens on SREH plates, like you mentioned. I had noticed on an older photo of your housing sometime back, that it looked like you were using round holes, that were converted to SREH by blocking a certain percentage of the round hole. That's the only part that maybe really hard to do, sinc...

Re: ASY Male arrived in central PA

Congrats on your arrival Toy!
Hope you get those starlings.
I know you had a tough time with them last season, killing a couple of your ASY males.
I would highly recommend going to some type entrance plate.

Re: Didn't understand wing entrapment until...

but this issue..nearly caused me to drop out of this hobby...it can be devastating to find dead birds year after year. John, That hit deep what you said. Apologies for getting off topic, but one thing that has made me question about whether or not to continue hosting/managing Martins at all, are th...

Re: Didn't understand wing entrapment until...

Great reminder Dave, about the inner-compartment holes.
John - I looked at the Coates manufacturer's website, and it still lists the Watersedge inner holes as being 2 1/4" in diameter - not good.

Re: Didn't understand wing entrapment until...

Great catch Brent. Great job as well for posting, reminding everyone to be one the lookout - especially with all the infighting that often occurs early in the season. John Miller was the driving force behind the creation of what is now the PMCA wing entrapment protectors. https://www.purplemartin.or...

Re: RIP PM

Keep in mind - once you increased the size of compartments (which is great), they immediately become much more attractive to starlings. Attractive enough that they'll kill any adult Martins that maybe trying to defend their compartments. If you're still using the round entrance holes shown in the ph...

Sorry for your loss.
That's a starling attack.
Can you describe your housing? (compartment sizes, entrance types, etc.)

Re: Which gourd bundle for beginner?

I'd recommend going with Troyer gourds - hands down.
One main, big reason - they come with thick, molded, wing-entrapment protectors.

Great photos Bob.
Folks may just want to know the name/creator of that great entrance.
That's a design from R.C. Moser, called the "Stealth".

Re: Happy 2019 - new PMCA product ideas

Thanks Dave.
I really hope the PMCA at least considers these changes/additions.
These are things (especially additional snake attack protection, and wing-entrapment protection being integrated into Supergourds, and Excluder Gourds) that really need to be addressed.

Re: Happy 2019 - new PMCA product ideas

I forgot one :-) 4. A simple, plastic plate that can be snapped onto all the insert traps (Universal traps, T-14 trap, and Trendsetter trap) to allow folks to trap house sparrows, without worrying about catching a Martin. Of course the gold standard is the Trio/Nature House Spare-O-Door, with its 1 ...

Happy 2019 - new PMCA product ideas

Happy 2019 all! Dear PMCA, Thanks as always for all you do. Being a new year, I would like to submit a few product ideas/enhancements, that would definitely benefit the Martins, as well as landlords and potential landlords. 1. Some type of easy to setup/apply snake netting applicator. Most of us alr...

Great video Ryan!
You have really setup some wonderful Martin housing in your area - at numerous sites.
I always loved following your story.
Martins will eventually be back in that part of Canada, thanks to you.

Re: Video of my chalet site from the air

Hi Ryan, Your perseverance is truly inspirational. This is thinking way outside the box (probably ridiculously so), but what about constructing a large Martin house, similar to the ones at that active site on that lake approx. 27 miles to your northeast. Perhaps even finding a location you could pla...

Re: Tulsa Roost 2018 located at Tulsa Airport again

Anita Harp and Dick Sherry - you all are superstars!
The atrocities being committed by airport personnel towards the roosting Martins, would no doubt be continuing without you all's intervention.
Truly great work!
