Re: I’m growing in numbers

Ya it’s a great feeling to see them in larger numbers when I go out to work in the yard they go crazy darting and diving. And I hope they grow again next year or even this year because Tennessee so far is only showing 7 to 8 subadults on the migration map. As far as room to grow I have the 30 compar...

I’m growing in numbers

Started this year with I think my matriarch pair. I was hoping to double the one pair I had from last year but the Lord has seen fit to give me about 10 or 12 maybe more Martins this year. Not sure how many pairs I actually have but I have 6 or seven nest with leaves in them. So hopefully I’ll have ...

Re: Gourd Cam

Hey Terrapincove is there any way you can tilt the camera down a little more to view the center of the nest cup. If it were tilted a little more you could possibly get to view the female actually laying the eggs. And would be able to see more of the chicks when they hatch. Just wondering if that was...

Re: Colony Being Destroyed

The traps are pretty small and pretty cheap. At least you would know what it is and could dispatch it quickly. And if it ever happened again you wo know what it is and what to do. It would be better than loosing another single Martin.

Re: Colony Being Destroyed

Just a thought but a small cat or even smaller type trap baited with raw meat would catch any type of meat eating predators. Put it at the base of the pole and set it. And wait if it’s coming every day or so it will take the free meal before doing all the work to climb pole and kill the birds. Good ...

Nest building and leaves

I have nine birds now and I decided to open all 24 gourds and the 6 room S&K barn just in case more move in. While I had them down I did a nest check and found two of the gourds have new green leaves in them so hopefully I’ll see some eggs soon. I have 3 adult males for sure and they have mates but ...

Re: Chicadee Interference

Hey Gotham I have an idea for you the small mouse traps work great but be advised only set and use them when you can be there to watch and make sure no other native birds try to enter. If he gets a mate wait until they commit to the alternative box house and start to build there nest or even laying ...

Re: Lots of new martins today

Well I really hope at least a few of them stay. This is now my fifth year trying to get a colony started. Did have one successful breading pair last year so maybe they will convince some of them to stay.

Re: Nest on ledge in shed, HOSP or not ??

Pull up pics of the male house sparrow he’s easier to ID. Watch the nest for a while if you see him coming or going from the nest you will know. Then do the deed and dispatch them quickly.

Lots of new martins today

There are seven or eight new birds adult males and females also sub adult males actively using the gourds I have hung up. I don’t believe I’ve ever had this many before th...

Re: Screech Owl house good idea or bad

Hey Dave Duet I was thinking of putting the houses 3 to 4 hundred yards away from the Martin racks up near the woods. I have all STEH and the racks at near my house. As far as the owls getting into the houses they have the tunnels. Sdsteil-IA I would think that the feathers found in your Kestral hou...

Screech Owl house good idea or bad

I was wondering if screech owls bother martin colonies. I was thinking about putting one along the wood line of my property. But I wanted to know if they would try to feed on martins. They are such a small owl wasn’t sure if they could even catch or kill a martin.
