Re: Would appreciate some coaching, New at this.

Your description of orange and white chest and royal blue back does sound like a bluebird . It's hard for me to tell from your picture if those are Martins or maybe a tree swallow. It appears to have a snow white chest, which leads me to believe it is a tree swallow. If you search a YouTube video of...

Re: Newbie...getting a second chance

Don't beat yourself up too much. Try and learn from the experience and move on, things happen. I would say open it up if you can control the rat birds. My take would be more options are better and you never know which nest suits their fancy.

Re: New Landlord By Mistake

That's great, if you added a couple gourds to your current setup, that would be plenty for this year and would give you the off season to figure it out. Keep after the sparrows as they need to be eliminated, not just removing the nest. Keep us posted.

Re: My SY Male Brought In a Female For a Look (Pics)

Bird brain, it might take awhile for the male to get his mate to stay. There have been several on this forum reporting that they had an sy male stay the entire year by himself only to come back the next year in full color and attract a mate. Anyone that is ready to give up should just keep doing the...

Re: Newbie/Confused

Have you watched at dusk or dark to verify they are not spending the night? As Dave suggested, make it look lived in to give them the confidence to stay. Don't be afraid to play the dawn song all day long. Maybe a decoy or two, they are helpful with hawk attacks after your established as well.

Re: New Landlord By Mistake

Duckcamp that sounds promising that they will stay if they're spending the night. These are my thoughts, adding to would not affect them. I don't think I would change the configuration of what they have been checking out and spending the night in. Maybe someone who has had direct experience with tha...

Re: Would appreciate some coaching, New at this.

Anyway to snap a picture for help identifying? There is also pictures on this pmca site that you can compare to your birds. If they have a yellow beak it's a Starling. Make sure to stay after the sparrows and starlings. Do you have starling resistant entrances? If they are indeed Martins have you wa...

Re: New Landlord By Mistake

First, I would say you are the luckiest person on this forum. :) I'm not familiar with th gourds you have, but someone else on here probably is. I would think drain holes for any nest would be good for eggs and hatchlings. Something like that wouldn't be too hard to alter during the day while they a...

Re: I haven't experienced this before. Bed time.

My birds when coming in for the night will start circling high in the sky and gradually move lower and lower, until they decide to come in and land. Not until the point they come in to land is there any vocalization. Then there are always some stragglers that go through that same process.

Re: Eggs/hatchlings with no nest material

I would think you could add nesting material to the nest. I know people do nest changes to get rid of potential pests. What would be the difference? I believe I have seen posted to not use Diatomaceous Earth.

Re: Continue Dawn Song?

Don't fix it if it's not broken. You are there to see what's going on and thought the dawn song brought in visitors while your pair was out feeding. That sounds like a good reason to keep doing what your doing.

Bluebirds and pine needles

The bluebirds next to my Martin housing have fledged their first brood. I have put pine needles out for the Martins to use for nest building. While setting out watching the Martins this morning I seen the bluebirds using the pine needles to build their second nest. I guess I hadn't noticed that befo...

Re: Too Late?

You still have time and even if you don't attract any to nest, leave your housing up until fall. New fledglings might see your housing and zone in on it to come back to next year.
