Re: SY Has Arrived & TS Wars

I agree with Randy on the dawn song. You can tell by watching if it is bothering them and if it is turn it off while they're there. I would keep playing it until you have a committed pair. Spending the night and nest building.

Re: Subadults in northern Illinois

I agree with opening up the cavities when the first scouts are seen in your area unless you have a hard time keeping undesirable birds out. A lot of colonies are started with ASY birds and you should take advantage of all possibilities when starting a colony.

Re: New Colony question

If they are committed and it sounds like they are, they will nest at your site even if no others decide to join them. The ASY males are very good at pulling in more pair, so there is a good chance of you adding a couple more pair. Watch for them bringing in nesting materials. Good Luck

Re: Identify nest

Looks like a sparrow nest, definitely not Martins. The sparrows should be eliminated. What is your options to kill them? If you can trap them where they're building, leave the nest so they keep coming back and into your trap. Regardless do not allow them to nest there, but removing the nest is not e...

Keep the faith, after all your struggles don't give in. Anything worth having is worth fighting for. SY birds should still be coming in. Perseverance will win!

Re: More Martins just showed up

Very possibly last years hatchlings (sy or second year) are coming in. They will arrive 4 to 6 weeks after the asy ( after second year) birds arrive. They could be hanging around more to protect their nest from the newcomers. Have you seen them carrying nest material to the housing? It should be tim...

Hang in there. Like posted above they are checking it out. If they like it you will start seeing more of them and they will spend the night. That is when your odds pick up.

Quite the battle you have been fighting Red and you have gained the upper ground. Keep it up and your efforts will be rewarded as it sounds very promising with the activity you're seeing. Hopefully you can get another pair or two to commit.

Re: Just Maybe!!!?

They definitely have some interest. You should stay out and watch your housing until dark to see if they come back and spend the night. That would be a real sign they have chosen your site.

Re: Newbie/Wannabe Landlord - Questions

Rusty, keep the dawn song going, that is your number 1 attractant to pull them in to have a look. Your predator guards can be diy if you can't purchase one specifically for your pole. The snake netting is just a bird netting which is fastened around the pole with a wire frame. I do think the cold we...

Re: May white out!

Sorry to be politically incorrect, but if it meant my Martins would survive if I brought them inside in a box versus it were illegal because I didn't take them to a licensed rehabber, I would be bringing them inside in a box.

David, I have no experience with anything like that. Hopefully with both parents in the nest they can keep them warm enough to survive. Let us know how it goes down.

Re: Tenants in the Duracraft Castle

After one sy pair claimed a nest the Duracraft is becoming more accepted. As I had hoped the new sy birds coming in are giving it attention, with 3 pair spending the night last night and lots of activity on it this morning.
