Re: Colony Being Destroyed

How about mounting a game camera in some fashion to get a picture or video.

Re: Colony Being Destroyed

You mentioned totally eaten up stomach. Is this a two part event where someting is killing the bird and then stomach being eaten by something else. I think it would be very odd for an sy bird would eat another bird. Makes more sense to be killed by an sy and eaten by a maggot or something internally.

Re: Nighttime artificial lighting

I have a dusk to dawn light on my barn that is 115 feet away from my Martin housing. I have not seen any negative effects. My only concern is that it could give night predators an advantage, but have not noticed anything there yet either.

A true soldier standing his guard. Well worth the money, I credit a decoy to helping attract my first ASY male and now helping protect them. Can't beat a 2 for 1.

Re: Chicadee Interference

At a minimum I've heard of people poking holes in the sparrow eggs so they continue to set on them, but they won't hatch.

Re: Chicadee Interference

Is there not a nest trap that will fit your house that would trap him as he enters the house? There are you tube videos of using a plastic bag over the house and then catch him in your hand. Then you can pull his head off, crush his skull or use ether to put him to sleep. If you don't want to buy a ...

Re: Yet another TS post

Just my 2 cents and I will say upfront that I have been fortunate enough to not have this problem. I would not let the Martin season pass me by to keep the TS out. I would let the Martins into the nest and continue to try and discourage the TS in some manner. Maybe someone will correct me, but what ...

Looks good, that one will last you and plenty of room for growth. What's the update on your Martins?

Re: Question on intruder nest

The simple answer to your question is Yes, both House Sparrows and Tree Swallows can enter the crescent shaped opening. It is a (SREH) Starling Resistant Entrance Hole intended to keep Starlings out. GFB has given some good examples to determine the intruder.

Re: Any time now, martins!

Great for you. Gourds are the preferred housing at my place too. The (sy) second year males look alot like the (asy) after second year females. Could very well be sy males. If they survive the trip to South America and back the successful nesting pairs will be back. Only a small percentage of the ha...

Re: Subadult females

Curtis, I am not at the point where I have had an issue with unavailable rooms. Hopefully my colony will continue to grow and I will have to deal with this in the future. I like the idea of keeping the colony fresh with younger birds each year. I hope you will report back as you learn more about you...

Re: Why do I not have martins

If you can play the dawn song all day then do so. I would think with the dawn song playing if there are any Martins in the area would at least come in to check it out.

Re: House Sparrow problems

I think your on the right track now that you figured out which nest is theirs. It shouldn't take long if they're wanting back in that bad. Keep a watch so if you do accidentally trap a Martin you can set it free.

Re: Dealing with neighbors while trapping sparrows

Don't feel guilty about trapping the sparrows. Your neighbors perception of sparrows is no more important than yours. Having a feud with your neighbor would make things very uncomfortable, so hopefully she will be an adult and you can agree to disagree and move on.

I don't know what the Martins home range might be. Someone more knowledgable than me will have to answer to that, but 5 miles doesn't seem that far for them.

Re: Hello

I don't think those ASY ( after second year) birds are just passing through. I think of passing through as spending the night and then moving on, weather permitting. Did the Martins land on your gutter all season long? If so I would say there has to be a colony near you. Sorry, I can't help with the...
