Nosey Neighbor

I’ve got an SY male paired up with a female.. they have 6 eggs. This little guy is probably the most entertaining SY male I’ve encountered.. he will constantly land on other gourds and house cavities occupied by other couples... poking his head in just to check things out.. maybe he’s bragging about...

Hatching Day in Louisiana

Yesterday the first of many eggs started hatching. ONe of my ChirpyNest boxes had 3 little pinkies out of 5 eggs hatching in the afternoon. Ive got over 30 eggs (hard to count some because females don’t move off nests sometimes). Two nests have just started laying eggs. Ive got 10 nests .. an incred...

Re: Why the fighting?

This year I’ve got quite a few SY males.. 5 SY males and 4 ASY males. I probably have one or two SY females as well, but I don’t usually try to ID them. I’m surprised to not see much fighting this year... maybe because they’re all paired up and content. Lol. Usually the fighting seems to be when an ...

Re: Good nest check

Great news David! Lost all mine with the mid Feb freezes, but have a bunch now and at least five new hatchlings this week (watched them hatch on TV). Probably have more, but this rain needs to stop so I can check the other nests. Todd Good to hear from you Todd! Been a while. I still work in Port A...

Wow.. Tree Swallows! Not a bad option to have in your BB boxes. Tree swallows are great to have.

Add another BB house somewhere to get a BB.

are you playing dawn song yet? Also, put up a couple of PM decoys on the housing.

That’s a rare event right there. Have never had any issues like that. Good thing you noticed.

Things like that (freak accidents) can happen any time.

Slow Motion Video

Here’s a slow motion video of a female bringing in nesting material. She can’t get it in first time and has to abandon the attempt. Second try is successful :) Edited the video into two shorter segments: Female Attempt 1: https://youtu.be/YCXFubucxgE Female Attempt 2: https://youtu.be/gvOtC5wJ6Zk

Re: When they appear out of nowhere

If you really want to have fun, add flipping meal worms to your morning or afternoon "meeting" with your martins as you walk around your colony. Bird That’s a great idea.. I love when they fly in when I appear to get close to gourd rack and they stay around the whole time (most of them) so it would...

When they appear out of nowhere

I think I’ve posted about this before.. Sometimes I’ll walk out in the back yard and it’s very quiet.. I look up and around and see nothing. But as I walk under the gourd rack.. a bunch of martins seem to appear out of nowhere,, it’s really interesting to me how they’ll spot something around the gou...

The Chirpy Nests are occupied now. The martins seem to love them (especially me). But the house and gourds are still loved by martins lol Shot this video around noon today: https://youtu.be/1GnKrXPWK90 Did you use the mulched pine needles in the Chirpy Nests? I would love to have that many this yea...

Re: Cheap Plastic House- My Soap Box Rant.

Yep I have the SK barn... blocked the attic openings and modified it to make the large cavities. Martins love it. I hung it from an arm of my gourd rack and it worked like a charm after about 4 seasons of no martins at a new location. My first two pairs last year picked the house over gourds. LoL I ...

Re: Up to 5 pairs now.. video

Great video! That was a gorgeous shot of them all cupping in to land on the rack. I wonder if the Chirpy Nest maker has ever considered making a multi-compartment Chirpy Nest house? Using the same great features of the current, individual units, and incorporating those into a large, multi-compartme...
