Re: Need advice on nutty chicks

Well,, as luck would have it of them scurried back into the cavity a little while ago. I think they were baking in the direct sunlight, or were fed enough. I feel better now. At least I know they are smart enough to know to go back inside. Ha! Also, a fledge landed and stood on the deck rail and hop...

Re: Devastated by Rat Snake

An easy, but messy remedy is to keep a thick coat of grease on the lower 4 feet of the pole. Yeah it’s messy, but nothing will touch it. My friend had a rat snake get past his snake netting, and into the gourds, but most of the birds stayed,, although none went back into the gourds that were attacke...

Re: Why the fighting?

I guess my year is done before it started. This is year #2. Issues: I completed weekly nest checks just like last year. I did kill sparrows, similar to last year when I Had one successful pair. This year the PMs were fighting for 3 weeks I had no idea what to do. I had barn swallows and did not kil...

Re: Need advice on nutty chicks

That is a good thought on opening the other side, but the parents may only go to the existing side to continue feeding the young. When the young reach the age of being able to take first flight, the parents sometimes reduce the amount of feeding their young to encourage them to leave the nest. If t...

Re: Need advice on nutty chicks

Something else happening is a male SY has been pecking on a couple of the porch dwellers. Then he gets attacked by the parents.

They’re probably in more danger from subbie males than hawks

Need advice on nutty chicks

I posted earlier about hatchlings in an SK Barn (w/ modified 12x12 compartments) sticking halfway out of the entrance hole. .. now some of them come out and sit on the front porch and the rest inside but sticking heads out of entrance. I’ve got 7 in that compartment. Here’s a pic of them — two are p...

Re: Storm just toppled my Martin house

I had a tritel pole for a season, which did fine, but for the next season I bought a gourd rack and it has a big square pole.

Your martins are gonna likely lay again. They dont give up. But keep in mind, the pole is even weaker now that it’s been stressed from bending and rebending.

Fledgings

My very first batch of chicks have fledged. Was able to see two of them take flight this morning and it was so exciting to witness it. One looked really strong.. nearly went straight up. The second one, not so good.. took flight but more of a descending line and kinda disappeared into the trees way ...

Re: Heartbroken at what just happened

Not too important where to put a decoy.. but put one up asap. Good luck. Those martins don’t mourn, they just get mad, then get back at it. It’ll be fine. :)

Re: FledgeDay crowds

Yes it is possible one took off, the parents will stop feeding them soon to coax them out. They are not very good at landing when they return for the night. Painful to watch. Years ago some fledges got caught in a sudden rain, scattered like leaves did not know what was going on. They were going in...

Re: FledgeDay crowds

Yes, it's very normal and interesting! I've noticed this activity the past 3 years since I became a landlord. I've only had a house in the past, and the chicks would all come out onto the porch before taking their first flight. I put up gourds with front porches this year and I'm interested in seei...

Re: Heartbroken at what just happened

The rest will come back. It takes a lot for all to abandon the young. But the hatchlings/eggs of the one that was snatched up by the hawk.. the ones in that nest are in trouble. I’m not sure if one parent will stick around. Maybe I’m wrong. If possible put up one or two PM decoys.. hawk will go for ...

Re: FledgeDay crowds

Yep, how they know i wish I knew. Loads of martins show up. Isnt it interesting? They will escort the fledges encouraging them to fly loads of fun to watch. I seem to remember reading about this. Yes.. yesterday i had quite a few that seemed to be “out of towners” circling low around the gourds. I ...

FledgeDay crowds

Is it typical behavior for other martins to sense fledge day and gather around the gourd rack to watch ? I have four ready to fledge and they seem to draw spectators. Wasn’t sure if this was common or it just seemed like that’s what I was seeing.

Re: At What Point To Stop Nest Checks?

I have martins ready to fledge any moment.. but had to do a nest check today. I did not bother the compartment the soon to be Fledglings were in.. i did a quick check in a gourd to put in fresh straw and sent the rack up nice and slow. And to remove a dead chick in another compartment. But yeah… Don...

The majority of my males are SY. I’ve got some SY females as well. The SYs behaved a lot better than last year.

You’re having a great year :)

Re: Muddy eggs

I’d leave everything alone. Not a bad idea, but it’s very easy to damage eggs, or make something worse.

I hate messing with nesting birds. Well, I don’t hate it, but it’s stressful.

Re: Hole too small or something else?

If you are using entrances from here (PMCA), I doubt they’re too small. Just give it more time..it appears you’re establishing a new site, so you’re competing with established sites nearby. Good luck and don’t give up Ps. you can always go back to the original round opening on some of the other comp...
