Re: 2021 Winter Taverner House Project

I made a taverner styled house. Tried to share pictures, but can't make it work. However... 2 important issues raised here that I'll expand on. Wood choice and maintenance was the demise of my house after 6 years. Pay the cost now if you want it to last. The pole that worked for my 75# house was lam...

Re: Should I move the Housing???

"Don't mess with success" sums it up. And you are having great success!
As my colony matures over 20 years, so have the trees! Incremental moves have not been a problem. Best to have a long game plan over several years than one big move in one year.

Backwards crazy martin person.

I bought a case of 60 eggs for $5.72 at Walmart only to discard the egg whites and yolk so I could have the egg shells. I got 3/4 of a pound of egg shells out of it. Worth it to me, but loony to anyone who's not a crazy martin person.

Re: Bo Nine PIUS, How to Install a Tunnel

Process is same for Bo 9 and Bo 9 plus. The front flat face of the 2 gourds are the same dimension, so the instructions are the same. Same is true of the Bo 11 and Bo 11 Plus gourds. I remember the procedure included cutting the front face along indention lines. I used a drill hole to access the ind...

Re: Check for capped eggs when doing weekly nest checks.

Good advise. I found 2 this year out of 31 active nests. One I saved to lead to hatching, but the other failed to hatch.

So that's about when

I've had a run on eggs shells the last 3 days. Young are mainly 10 to 15 days old. So that must be about when the young are fed egg shell for grit. This morning I watched a male go from egg shell tray to the nest 5 times. The last time he selected a large piece and took off the opposite direction. T...

Re: Storm just toppled my Martin house

There is hope! I live just 60-70 miles from you the way the crow flies. The same happened to me about this time of year 12 years ago. It did make me buy poles intended for use with martin housing. I thought galvanized steel (I believe 1 3/4") would have been good. Nope. Buy the mid to upper range qu...

Mud Smeared Eggs

After 20 some years of hosting martins you can still learn valuable things. Last year I had a nest with mud smeared eggs. They did not go to completion. A re-nesting occurred once I removed them, but that was after 3 weeks . This year, a very wet one, I had 4 nests with muddy eggs. The 2 that were s...

Re: Heartbroken at what just happened

Just watched a female Coopers Hawk make 3 attacks on my colony. Each time she grabbed 1 of 9 decoys. The hawk went 3 times to decoys on perch rods and egg shell tray.
I move the decoys around every couple of days to prevent the hawks from learning which ones are the fakes.

Re: Best PM Perch Diameter, Material, Paint Color

Practically, martins can perch holding onto a large variety of diameters and varied material perches. Regarding wooden dowels, 1/4 inch has worked best for me. Primarily it lasts longer. Less than 1/4 doweling ages and breaks within about 2 years. Secondarily as another martin land lord told me, 1/4...

Re: Muddy eggs

You're right. Best left alone. I did a nest check after the rain today. 3 of the 4 muddy nests are looking better. There's signs that the eggs are being turned by the decrease in muddy streaks. The one nest I wondered most about is having activity from pair. The SY (second year) female might just be...

Re: At what age can a chick walk?

At 18-20 days old the young are strong enough to jostle to the entrance. Per se martins do not walk like longer legged birds. They perch and make feeble hops, but not walk. They are truly birds of the sky!

Muddy eggs

Last year I had a clutch of eggs that smeared with mud. The clutch failed. Fortunately a very late pair nested in that gourd. Presently, after a very wet week I found 4 nests with dirty egg. Two clutches were only slightly dirty. There is activity in all but 1 of the 4 clutches with dirty eggs. I'm ...

Decoys distracting the hawk

"There's a hawk attacking and flopping the martins!" my wife cried out. Running to the window I discovered a hawk had grabbed a martin decoy and was frustrated by its intractable nature. Two days later I witnessed the hawk fly in, grab a mourning dove decoy only to the hawk's disappointment.

Re: Decoys taking a beating

Great story and hope for decoys frustrating the Cooper's hawk. My decoys are taking a beating every day by a hawk. With the pivoting perch rod and clipped on decoys, each attack has a visible aftermath. Yesterday I thought I totally lost one. The perch was swung 90 degrees, perched decoy fallen over...

Re: to nest check or not to nest check - old babies

Great advise already given. For me, I pushed the nest checks later last year. Typically once the first nests get to 22 days I quit the nest checks. But last year I plugged the holes, lowered the rack & did the check then raised the rack. I waited 6 to 10 minutes not wanting to have them overheat in ...

Re: Have you had 100% occupancy?

I'm at 100% with 32 out 32 gourds with eggs. In over 20 years this is a first. Typically there are 2 to 3 scant nests built and never completed or become active with egg laying.

Muddy eggs.

Last week I found 6 eggs in a gourd, all were muddied with soil. Two of the 6 eggs were pushed out of the nest towards the entrance. Rest of the nest was unremarkable. Today, same thing. I removed the un-nested eggs. I've never seen dirty eggs in 20 years. Our weather was very wet when the egg layin...

Re: Egg on the porch

Egg must be bad. If setting on the nest has begun, I believe this egg will not mature. Typically I'll leave shoved aside eggs until next nest check, then take them away. I've yet in 20 years seen one reincorporated into the nest.
