Re: Continue Dawn Song?

Don't fix it if it's not broken. You are there to see what's going on and thought the dawn song brought in visitors while your pair was out feeding. That sounds like a good reason to keep doing what your doing. Well put, I like the sound of that. I am just going to leave things be at least until Ju...

Re: Continue Dawn Song?

Good to know and thanks for the info. I’ve got a pair of SY’s that don’t seem bothered by it. On occasion they will circle it and sometimes perch on my internet dish nearby it that is on the garage. They soon fly back to the house though and don’t seem to mind it. I think it has helped attract other...

Re: Continue Dawn Song?

Sounds great; I’ll just leave it alone and then turn it off at the start of July. I’ve read on other threads to turn it on again towards the end of the season for the reasons you listed, so I will do that as well. Thank you for the advice and I hope you have a great season!

Continue Dawn Song?

I’m a newbie and am thrilled to have a SY pair staying the night. They’ve stayed now for about 10 days and may now just be starting to slowly start nest building. I’ve read in other threads that the dawn song can potentially scare off new martins while other threads suggest leaving it play until you...

Re: When do SY pairs start nest building?

If you get in the habit of lowering your house every 5-7 days throughout the season, you will know what's going on and when nests are being built. We drop our houses and gourds every 5 days, weather permitting, to make sure everythings ok . The birds get used to us. We drop our houses until the las...

When do SY pairs start nest building?

I’m a rookie and am wondering when SY’s start nest building. I’ve had a pair staying overnight for a week now but haven’t seen them do much besides check out the holes. They seem to have picked 2 that they like and will sing and sit on the porches but haven’t started nest building yet. They’ve rearr...

Re: Newbie/Wannabe Landlord - Questions

Rusty, keep the dawn song going, that is your number 1 attractant to pull them in to have a look. Your predator guards can be diy if you can't purchase one specifically for your pole. The snake netting is just a bird netting which is fastened around the pole with a wire frame. I do think the cold w...

Re: Newbie/Wannabe Landlord - Questions

Sounds like you may be a little over anxious. You did right by making the rooms bigger. I initially had mine with 12 but as soon as i switched to 6, had nesters within a week or two. Sounds like you have enough space too. Be patient. Im assuming there is water nearby? Yeah, there are a few differen...

Re: Newbie/Wannabe Landlord - Questions

I'm no martin professional, but I'm unfortunately becoming a professional for waiting for martins. I think you're in good shape, don't sweat the birds that left, there will be more. Be patient, it takes time. I'm in year 10 and you've already seen more martins than I have in 10 years. You're lucky ...

Re: Newbie/Wannabe Landlord - Questions

Ryan the song bird magnet is great and it’s just small enough to fit in the attic of the barn style house you just run the power cord down the pole and to a timer. It also puts your speaker higher in the air which is always a good thing. The main key Rusty is don’t give up you are already ahead of ...

Re: Newbie/Wannabe Landlord - Questions

Hey rusty do you have the red and silver S&K barn with the tri pole if so I have one of them and it has withstood winds as high a 40mph and never bent at the least. But I don’t put mine to the highest holes. And if you have modified the house the attic area is a great place to put one of the green ...

Newbie/Wannabe Landlord - Questions

Hello, I apologize in advance for the long message. The more I read, study, and learn about Purple Martins, the more I strive to become a landlord. While this is, technically, my 2nd year at attempting to start a colony, I soon realized that my attempt last year was doomed from the start. I found a ...
