Re: Martins in Central Virginia

Thank you Dave. I read in the forum the term "white bellies" and those are the ones that were showing up unexpectedly. I assume those are young Martins. Second year? I'll keep the gourds up in case some in transit stop by. I so enjoyed watching the Martins this second year. I plan on putting up a se...

Martins in Central Virginia

I thought they left July 29th. But subsequently they came back. Then left for a few days. Now they are back. What's going on? I wonder if these are the ones that nested at my place or some that are on their way to the roost area where they will prepare for the long journey south? I'm guessing the ro...

Purple Martin Festival in Richmond VA

Does this festival still take place? Is the roost still there? I'd like to go see the colony roosting. Perhaps it's too early, my Martins are still in my backyard.

Re: At what age do the babies fly out of the gourds?

Thank you! I will start doing that next year. I do walk by them several times a day, probably more than they like. I haven't seen any that looked wing trapped or on the ground. I hope they don't have mites. They had flown away by this time last year. I love watching them. I'll miss them.

Re: At what age do the babies fly out of the gourds?

I'm not sure Ed. Do people lower the gourds and look inside? I try not to disturb them, but I think I read that is okay to do. Is it? So I'm not sure how many I have. At first I had six birds now I have 12. An earlier post informed me the second year birds probably came back. This is my second year....

At what age do the babies fly out of the gourds?

Hi - I've been watching the live nest cam in Erie PA. It says they are 22 days old and it looks like they are fully feathered. When do they try flying? Do they usually succeed or do some hop around on the ground first? Advice on what to do in that case... I'm in Central Virginia and have 4 gourds, I...

Re: More Martins just showed up

Yes their behavior pattern changed recently. It had been that they would leave in the morning and be out all day. In the evening they would return. Now, as I mentioned, more showed up and they are hanging around most of the day. And yes, I have seen them carrying nesting material into the gourds. I ...

More Martins just showed up

I'm here in Central Virginia and have 4 gourds. Up until recently 4 and 5 Martins were occupying the gourds. Then a couple of days ago more showed up. I think there are 8 now. Is this unusual? Also they seem to be sticking close to the gourds now. What stage are they in? Thanks.

Re: Roosting

Thank you flyin-low that makes sense. I appreciate your sharing that explanation with me. Last year I was surprised when all of a sudden the Martins left. I don't remember the month and day they left but I remember thinking - wow that was a short stay. It just makes me appreciate them more every day...

Roosting

I'm here in Central Virginia. I have 4 gourds and count 5 Martins. Two male and three female. I would have thought there would be an equal number. Is this odd? Also, don't know why but today they are all sitting on the supports to the gourds or on the landings going into the gourds. Today it is driz...

Thanks. I thought that might be the case. I might buy a pellet/bb gun.

Sparrows getting comfortable around gourds

Some Martins have shown up on several occasions but then they disappear. I continue to play the dawn song in the mornings. Now though, I'm noticing Sparrows hanging around on the gourds. I don't want the Sparrows to discourage the Martins from moving in. What can I do? Thanks

Hmm, sparrows are not interested in the gourds. What is the best way to keep sparrows out? Thanks

Re: Purple Martin arrivals in Central Virginia

Thanks flying-low I might do that. I'm playing the dawn song again. Also I lowered the gourds and found some wasps in one of them. I got rid of them. Would wasps have discouraged the Martins from nesting here?

Hmm, I haven't seen them in a couple of days. Could they have decided to go elsewhere? Do Martins do that? :?:

Re: Purple Martin arrivals in Central Virginia

I bought the pole, gourds, and predator guard all from PMCA. I was late in deciding to get the predator guard and the day it arrived a huge black snake was headed to the pole. The predator guard arrived just in time and I put up right away. I borrowed a boom box from a friend and played the dawn son...

Re: Purple Martin arrivals in Central Virginia

Thank you for the information flying low. When I cleaned out the gourds (4) if I remember correctly there were only two or three nests. However there were more than 4 or 6 Martins in and around the gourds last year. I will search youtube for a dawn song or fire up old computer with dvd drive. I didn...
