Re: FledgeDay crowds

Yes, it's very normal and interesting! I've noticed this activity the past 3 years since I became a landlord. I've only had a house in the past, and the chicks would all come out onto the porch before taking their first flight. I put up gourds with front porches this year and I'm interested in seein...

Re: ASY male having difficulty entering compartment.

Hi Y'all - This is only my opinion, and this is only my 4th year of being a PM landlord. I thought the same at first - the entrance was too small, and large males had trouble getting in, but from what I have seen, when birds want to get in pronto, they get in without any problem at all! I don't know...

At What Point To Stop Nest Checks?

Greetings Fellow Landlords, ?1 - In years past I noticed parent birds getting very "edgy" when chicks are about to fledge. Birds from other nearby colonies would show up - I suppose to help guard the fledglings or to celebrate...?? At that point I stopped doing nest checks fearing chicks might try t...

Re: How in the world do you guys count Martins?

I completely agree with Tom - gourds are the way to go! The last 3 years I had a house that had 12 - 6"x6" units that I converted to 6 - 12"x6" units. Martins liked it, but only had 3 pairs. This year I put up a wagon wheel design rack with 6 gourds, and hung 6 more gourds from the house. 11 of the ...

Re: What To Do After A Hawk Attack?

Coolwhips, Thanks for the reply and info. I'm going to place one decoy on top of the house, one on top of the gourd rack, and one on top of the fence that is in line with the most frequent route the martins fly to/from the housing. FYI - I have not seen any evidence of another hawk/owl attack, but t...

Re: What To Do After A Hawk Attack?

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post. I've got an airhorn and will use it if/when I see a hawk. I say it's a coopers hawk because that's the only type of hawk I've ever seen around here in middle Georgia. I've also seen my birds divebombing them after they had raided other bird nests in the nei...

What To Do After A Hawk Attack?

Greetings Fellow Purple Martin Landlords, There was a Coppers Hawk attack today on my colony of birds, killing 1 bird :-( , and I'm not sure of what, if anything, I can or should do to prevent future attacks. I have 1 house with 6 units and 12 super gourds. There are 15 pairs of birds with different...

Is It Unusual For ASY Males To Pair With SY Females

Greetings Fellow PM Landlords,

For the 2nd year, ASY males are pairing with SY females. I name the males "Chester the Molester", LOL! Is this normal/typical behavior by Purple Martins?

Terry - in the small town of Buckhead, GA

Re: Egg On Ground - Put Back Into Suspected Nest

Thanks for the reply. My first thought was "bad" egg, but my wife convinced me it had to be put back - that led to the nest check. NOTE: The nest with 1 egg was the SY pair that arrived weeks later than the ASY pairs, (as you know, the males all arrived first then convinced a female they were worthy...

Egg On Ground - Put Back Into Suspected Nest

Today, I found a normal looking egg (no cracks or holes - weight felt normal) on the ground directly under a PM house with 3 nesting PM pairs - 2 . ASY pairs, 1 SY pair. I had a sparrow problem when the ASY birds arrived, but I convinced the sparrows to leave and not return.... No starlings or other...
