i'm wondering if i have a subadult female visiting?

I was about to give up on this year, but then I got 3 visitors 4 days ago. they hung around for 20 minutes, then left. Now yesterday morning and this morning a lone bird has been checking out houses for about 3 hours, and keying on one troyer vertical gourd. It is awfully white underneath, but not l...

Re: Any time now, martins!

Thanks for the replies and I since could wait no longer so I put up the rest of the houses this morning. as for Billie JR's request here is a snapshot attached reduced to 420kb so it should hopefully appear. Zoom in to see a few swallow houses around the pond. still no subbies reported in my area or...

Re: Chimney Swifts are back.....

I'm seeing both swifts and hummingbirds, and for the night niche, I'm trying something new. I put up a large nursery bat house over the winter. I don't know when they arrive but we always have them in the summer starting at dusk and doing the 'night shift' at insect patrol. these are the little brow...

Any time now, martins!

I'm here in North central Ohio waiting my turn to get a shot at martins. I'm in my 3rd (or 4th) year trying in a decent location to get something started. I see that I can use the scout study to check subbies coming to Ohio from last year, and see that they should start showing up any day, but patie...

Just tell those subbies to head north when they arrive! I'm ready and waiting. I see a subbie report in Hillsborough, Ohio this am. I'll keep you posted, Dick.

Re: New landlord survey

Hi buckdog, I'm in north central Ohio and this will be my 4th year trying in good martin country (Amish). this year the closest I've come to a martin landing here was a week ago when an adult male landed several times looking at different openings. nothing since but it seems martins are drifting in ...

Re: How do I make a scout report?

get out of the forum, and go to the scout report page. under the map to the right is a button to report a scout sighting. I also searched all over the forum, but it's not there.

Re: Dawn song questions

I just typed an extensive reply and clicked 'submit' but it never appeared! Lost in the ethernet! too busy to type it all again. This has happened before. i'll wait to see if it appears after some sort of delay, and if it doesn't, i'll re-type it. I'm also trying to get martins in NE Ohio. Tim Boyd ...

Re: Camera Recommendation

If you have wifi and a Windows computer, and If you're not afraid to order from China, I got a really nice one from a company called 'securityshop' through ebay for around $200. You need an ethernet cable to connect the camera to your wifi which allows you to see and record to your computer. setting...

Re: Another newbie question

I'm in your same situation here in north central Ohio. I had a SY male hang around 2 years ago, and last summer I started the dawn song early in hopes that that male survived the winter, and return as a fully adult male to the same place. It did not, but what if that persistent male from last year h...

Re: My Quest for Wannabee of the Year

Mitch, I might just call on you in the near future! I grew up in Massillon, and one of my haunts as a kid was the Nimisila Creek. maybe Mike and I will take a motorcycle hike your way to compare notes. you can get to me by my email, tboydshirt@gmail.com if you want to hook up. also, feel free to com...

My Quest for Wannabee of the Year

attached you might find 2 pictures. one is 1.1mb and the other is .468mb. I've seen where pmca won't publish pictures above a certain resolution. anyway, I hereby submit my efforts to the competition for the hardest working wannabee in the whole pmca community. for this, my third year trying, I have...

I'll take 5 at that price! Please ship to 4511 Evans creek, Sugarcreek, Oh! :)
Seriously, I built a (sort of) T14 with free wood except the pole, and ended up with around $400 with pole, pully, winch, hardware, cement, etc.

Re: Martins pair for season... or life?

Thanks for the info. I read/skimmed that lengthy article, and think now that both sexes will have strong imprints to the site of their previous nesting but not to their previous mate. Apparently the second year birds are not so strongly imprinted too the exact location. I'm still trying to get marti...

Re: Identification help needed

in Victoria, Australia, they have swallows which look much like barn swallows with one exception. males and females there have the same length tail forks. I spent a year there in 1984 as an exchange teacher. I wonder if that picture was painted there?

Re: Martins pair for season... or life?

Thanks for the replies, and my question probably is best addressed by actual banding studies. I got the dimorphism angle from a professor while working on my masters degree long ago. it seems to hold here with our geese who arrive each February with their last year brood tagging along. the pair firs...

Martins pair for season... or life?

I've been taught that as a rule, if a species exhibits sexual dimorphism (males looking different from females) they will mate for a season at most. but species with males and females looking the same (Canada geese, angelfish, etc.) tend to mate for life. So, is there evidence like banding which sho...
