Re: Nighttime artificial lighting

I have a set of Motion Activated Flood Lights that face directly at my housing and it doesn't have any affect on the Martin's when they come on.

Re: When to expect nest building?

Dale, your right on the money. Eggs in the nest by Easter! I lowered the gourds Monday following Easter to check the security of one of the gourds after the high winds we had on Good Friday. I only checked the one gourd and it had 5 eggs plus mom. She stayed put the entire time while I re-capped th...

Re: 4th Nest Check

Congratulations, mjfog on your Martin eggs. I did a nest check here again yesterday. To date my Martins have laid a total of 63 eggs in 12 nests averaging 5.25 eggs per nest. Of the 63 eggs I have one nest with 6 hatch-lings.

Re: Numbers Way Down

Dale. It seems like overall there might be a decline in Central Fl. I’ve not seen as many flying around the near by lake. We had a total of 12 come in last night. The only hawks I see around are the red tailed and no problems with owls as I use the load music to keep them away. Might be just a decl...

Re: When to expect nest building?

Joe W, I have had a colony here in Orlando for 15 years and my Martins generally begin egg laying around Easter most seasons. Watch for them to begin bring in the green leaves and the eggs will follow shortly thereafter. Hope you have a great 2019 season. The problem is, Easter never seems to stay ...

Re: Pole w/ Winch for T-14

My suggestion would be to go with at least a 3" square pole with either Worm Gear or Brake Winch. IMO, 16' to 20' is much too high for a T-14 due to its weight. I would hold it to no more then 14' and preferably 12' off the ground and lower to maybe 8' during storms.

Re: Sightings map & Song player

Your're not too late. The Martins arriving in your State now are adults and returning to the sites they used last season, Your best chance of starting your colony will be when the SY Martins begin arriving in your area which they aren't there yet. Best of luck to you!

Re: Question Concerning Clinger Tunnels

I've ordered & received clinger entrance tunnels for my gourds. The instructions state to cut along a line on my gourd entrance to make a larger entrance. This would make it easier for the martins, but seems to me by leaving the gourd as is & attaching the tunnel would make it more difficult for a ...

Re: Mail Box Cavities

Hey Dale what if you know is the weight difference between a mail box and like a bo11 or similar large gourds like that. I know you have wenches on the racks but some people might still use pull ropes. And the lighter the set up the better when it comes to lifting a rack manually. Thanks in advance...
