Interesting sparrow behavior

We have all seen those sparrows in big box stores, drives me nuts. Saw one yesterday when getting suet, it was eating seeds spilled from a bag on the ground. As I walked up it flew to the rack about 7 feet up and sat right on the edge waiting, just sitting there not worried. Interesting part was its...

Re: Snake guards

Morning Brent, should have said that; its important....its 3/4 inch. A combo would be better, correct. Chucks instructions said to "pleat" the netting when stapling it to the guard, its nice and tight and overlaps. here's a picture on the trio pole. if you look close you can see the 10 gauge wire st...

Re: 2021 Winter Taverner House Project

MJM, Sounds like you are full steam ahead, I'm glad of that. I'm not building one but reading the pole requirements and weight i cringed a bit. Just my 2 cents....sounds like your house material will last years and years, so too will the martins, they will be with you for life so why not just bite t...

Re: Gourd Seeds

Hey, try American gourd society, and select your state. Looked to be a good resource. I hope it works for you, I love those natural gourds....in fact spent a few hours today stuffing 12 natural gourds with pine needles. As the season gets closer to start more will chime in, may even send you some. Tom

Re: 2021 Winter Taverner House Project

Not a problem sir, would be great to see it. A good solid house with a good solid foundation will reduce lots of those sudden storm worries, sounds like you like to build to last...your martins are with you for life so why not?
Respectfully
Tom

Re: 2021 Winter Taverner House Project

I have zero experience with this type of house so forgive me...is a 1.5 inch round pole going to hold the weight ok? From my experience with a 1.5 inch round pole with a trio mini castle (even reinforced with a garage door winding rod) it sways pretty good.

Re: 2021 Winter Taverner House Project

Good morning! wow, that would be a worthy endeavor-those are real legacy in the martin world. Love to see it when done. I remember the heck you went through with that old heath, since they were attracted to it last season, good idea to leave it up for now anyway. Maybe you could close off some of th...

Re: Bed and breakfast feeding...any ideas??

Brent, like the thinking. I like the ones PMCA sells, I even toyed with the idea of putting a platform in the v between gourd arms where they meet at the hub (made it too) but it would also mean putting up the house and lowering it to add more crickets or meal worms. Be too disruptive in my view. Bu...

Re: red headed woodpecker

Kegger, thats very cool. those are neat looking houses...sounds like woody has chosen a home. good idea on making one a sparrow trap by the way! woodpeckers are interesting birds, we have one that drinks from the hummingbird feeder (had a rufus all last winter, so it's up) on occasion and eats at th...

I don't believe so, Mr Barrow has a woodpecker house about that close to his set up. You may find it trying to widen your entry ways

Re: Spare o door location question

Awesome, thank you Tom. I'll put in the dried grass, just a bit hanging out of the hole too? Make it look homey. No bluebirds down here, (sadly) only cavity nester we have to deal with are sparrows, starlings and occasional woodpecker.

Spare o door location question

Recently acquired a 12 unit grandpa trio, enlarged compartments, complete with the older model spaghetti rails. it was well maintained, just re painted it, took it apart and gave it some TLC. Its on a winch system, came with with pole. Almost a shame to turn it into a sparrow trap but thats what ill...

Re: Why use pine straw in your gourds?

I don't have any evidence either, however it just makes sense. If its an aluminum house, the cold will seep in and if a martin is laying on the floor, it will drain its heat, sapping strength. Even in a plastic gourd, seems to me its the same thing. Natural gourds might be better. Its a tough flight...

Robert, did you find your erva trio winch? I remember the upgrades you wanted to do. (I don't have the hardware though). I just acquired a trio castle, and a trio Grandpa, both came with winches. If you need one, ill be happy to send one to you. Complete with wire. Send an email to thomas.sullivan41...

Re: With all this talk on nesting material

They probably are, if your site is agreeable to them they will come. Sounds like it is, the older birds are very dedicated to their site, so the young will come first, older birds will follow if there is no room at their old site or predators attack etc. Its the young you want, they will build your ...

Re: With all this talk on nesting material

Man sounds like a great set up-solid systems. Can't go wrong with a t14! Guess trimming trees is out, haha. No worries. Trust me pine needles are the way to go. Wish we had that many here! I'd put 2 round holes up, put them so you can shoot from cover and protect them. Id be prepared to put your SRE...

Re: With all this talk on nesting material

Good morning! what type is the house you used last year? you definitely have something the martins like, and Id expect your numbers to increase rapidly especially with added gourds. so here's my 2 cents: with a budding colony you may be able to get away with offering a few round holes, but only a fe...

Brent, saw some pictures of the devastation-lots of leafless trees...those that were still standing anyway. Good thinking on getting what you could, should serve you many seasons.

Re: Nesting material

David, Most folks place pine needles, a few handfuls in the gourds would be fine. Martins like them. They add their own material when real nest building begins but it gives them a good head start. Pine needed drain water very well and won't turn to mush like dried straw will. How? Put them in throug...
