Re: Cat sounding Martin

Interesting! They do some strange things, last year I had one with a croaky voice, very horse, didn't sound much like a Martin. Yours is very unique, you will be able to tell when it returns next year for sure (something to look forward to!). Brad has some good advice, its not something you did...Lo...

Re: Rain, cold...update in central PA

Toy,
I was hoping for dryer weather for you and the northern land lords this year. Mother nature takes her toll. I hope your single birds rally and find a mate though. Fingers crossed for your eggs!

Re: Will martins lay a second clutch?

That sir is a great story!!! Those sparrows are smart, sly and frustrating as heck. Then to have the martin be part of its downfall then a big bass eating him up is priceless. Boy, couldnt have gotten a better story. Thanks for sharing! If you ever catch that bass, just let it go it did its job!

Re: ‘Lil babies out on porches?

David, Thats good, sounds like they have the run of the place then. well an old school sorta guy may not take care of the birds and they may be bailing and hitting the ground; he may be experiencing desperate chicks trying to escape starvation or whatever. anyway, bail and fly, pretty much explains ...

Re: ‘Lil babies out on porches?

Thats great! I love seeing them poke their heads out for the first time. They get into everything. Couple of things to watch for: them going into other compartments: porch dividers serve a couple of purposes, prevents male porch dominanace and the chicks from wandering into other housing. They could...

Re: Too Much Heat

Yep, every time i get into my hot car i think of the birds. During the summer our only saving grace is the sea breeze. Buckets are a good idea got a bait bucket with lid hatch to put them in. Only used once this season...fingers crossed...its early

All in all a good season

Well been a very busy but good season, didnt post much at all, like giving my two cents for advice, lord knows i need it. Lost 3-4 martins to a stinking hawk early on, one of which was a returnee from last year, that was bad...fed his chicks by hand for a few weeks on and off cuz they were starving ...

Re: Too Much Heat

Its tough to go through that, and you got some good advice; venting to increase airflow, bug control and suppmental feeding to give them strength. Had same thing happen last year on a late nest, very hot and dry for months little food to be found. got the chicks back in but noticed i could feel the ...

Re: house sparrow scarer

Could very well, be safer to assume yes. Sorry to hear about that, their range isnt that big so if you can get as many as you can until after fledging some of the pressure will be off. I put up a blind in the back but didnt work for sparrows, does for starlings...a trap works best.
Best of luck!

Re: Attack of the Western KingBird !!

Anthony, sounds like your Kingbird has claimed some territory near the martins...also he may just be pestering the martins for the food they are brining in for the chicks. Hoping they drop something so it can get scarffed up. There are a pair of mocking birds that have learned to wait on the fences ...

Re: Two eggs on ground

Could be both. Sounds like you have a persistent set of sparrows...could very well be them. They are very wary, perhaps set up a blind? Can always shoot/trap sparrows but not much to do about those young males. One LL here in my neck of the woods recently lost an adult male and some chicks to a subb...

Re: Egg On Ground - Put Back Into Suspected Nest

Yep, youll find the younger birds have not learned the nest guarding. They learn the lesson the hard way, when the chicks are older we can worry less. Good that you caught the egg outside, whether or not it survives good job.

Re: Egg On Ground - Put Back Into Suspected Nest

Tough to tell, Id initially suspect any bachelor SY males. 5 to one egg per nest ratio is a lot; without checking its hard to tell if the nest with one egg had more at some point and a predator is getting to them or they are slow at laying; if your finding eggs on the ground somethings dumping them....

Cap the cones? Perhaps block them. Thats too bad, they pick the strangest places. Have hanging baskets in a large bush for doves to nest yet they chose my neighbors ladder 3 feet off the ground to nest.

Re: Sitting in Rain

Yep, remember they are tropical birds, seen them nose to tail dripping wet. Adults dont mind in the least, two years ago had a few chicks get caught in a down pour, first rain they experienced, they were desperate to get in, wrong cavities, two at a time etc...did not like it at all. Me, id head in.

Re: Distressed ASY Purple Martin on ground

Second the hawks gone now from corpus thank God, lost a few early on to a sharpie...one of which was an ASY that returned from last year he was a SY that raised 3 chicks by himself; did some supplemental feeding of his chicks as they were starving at the end of our dry hot summer...he had a strange ...

Re: Distressed ASY Purple Martin on ground

That stinks sorry for the loss, how many eggs and chicks would be in the nest? With the amount of rain we have had lately the female will find food. Perhaps another male will move in? Im thinking watch that gourd close and check the chicks, if they arent doing well, perhaps move one or two to a smal...

Re: Scared away a female???

It can be worrying when they dont return for a bit, glad she showed up for you. Time the lowering right and they will be fine, unless theres a real emergency like a trapped bird etc, dont lower early in the morning when egg laying activity may be on going. Avoid dusk or at night. I wait till they ar...
