Re: Migration stalls until the 8th

Had two ASYs male come in day before yesterday, during the front, very cold wind and they were tired. Wings drooping. Tried to huddle on the balconys for warmth because the residents wouldnt let them in and they did not like the crescents. Eventually i went out to stir them off and were allowed into...

Re: Pesty dangerous hawk...

Hi Clivia98, Its rough watching that, you sound like you have the decoys up which is working...hawk wastes his/her attack. Keep them up and maybe try to figure out what direction the attacks are coming from, so u can move the decoys around. Keep moving them, hawk will learn fast. Best defense is you...

Re: Flea and mite control

Hello GFB, congrats on your fledges and birds! I bought some of that too, then read if inhaled by the birds and chicks can cause respiratory infections. Id highly recomend sevin dust, just have to put a very little under the nest, quarter teaspoon or so. Keep it away from humidity while stored, it l...

Re: when to do nest checks

Hi, it can be nerve wracking at first, but very necessary for your colony. Do a search for nest checks in the advanced search. Toy in PA had a great post about it. Its rewarding but there is some science behind it especially when u have older chicks in one nest, young chicks in another. Older chicks...

First thought...resounding no! Your instincts are correct. They wouldnt do well, may not come back. Lots of their predators are avian, it would be another threat.

Re: Dangerous cracks in gourds

If the calk gun is too much the stuff comes in squeeze tubes too. Advice: go to lowes or.home depot ask one of the folks who work there that u are looking to do small repairs and need all weather, easy to use fixer. A squeeze tube is probably better for you then my first advice. Robert nailed it, ke...

Re: Dangerous cracks in gourds

Lexel is top notch, get the indoor/outdoor white. Get a caulk gun and cut just the top off the spout. Draw a bead across the crack, inside and outside...you can do that with your finger inside. Then wet your finger and smooth it over, you would be surprised how good it looks. Dries quick and is wate...

Re: Purple Martin and Blue Birds

Welcome! You may get mixed responses about the blue birds, if you can do what Bob suggested and put up a house if possible 100 feet away, thats their territory limit. Dont want to molest them but when the season heats up their tempers may flare. Put up an acceptable blue bird house then think about ...

Re: A big purple wave is on the way.

Wave is right! Well have three males and a female now, i think one is the very early arrival, the males are trying to show her their choices one chose the house the other the natural gourds. She seems to prefer the gourd (after all my hard work on that house) and the pair slipped right in and...

Re: EFFECTS OF SUPPLEMENTAL CALCIUM ON THE GROWTH RATE OF AN INSECTIVOROUS BIRD: THE PURPLE MARTIN (Progne subis)

Interesting! I think we all have found stange things in the cavities after seasons end. We live on the coast and find broken bits of shells left behind, the ones left are fairly large, almost half an inch long...too big to injest id imagine. What i found most interesting was the early nestlings grew...

Re: Gourd questions

Well if it looks off to you can it be straightened? Im a little OCD when it comes to the porches, and orientation...where you are id bet wind is a consideration. What type of gourds do you have? Tunnel entrances or staight porches? Side to side swining is ok, dont want them rocking back to back but ...

Re: Banging The Gourd.

Do what you can not to let that happen sounds like you have a few good ideas. Switch them up or buy the arms. I dont even like mine rocking so have pinned them to the arms, slight sway in a stiff wind is all that happens. Its just that its always windy here so i combat it.

Re: Should I lower my houses since severe weather is predicted for south Louisiana

Ill echo it, doesn't sound like you need to worry about orientation. just try to lower it before the birds go in for the night if at all possible. Here is a cool website for your use to help watch the weather: https://www.windy.com. I am glued to it when weather starts turning for the worst so I can...

Re: nest trays

As long as the tray isnt blocking their way in or after they start using the cavity cant pop up and block access you will be fine, its a good way to do the nest replacements and easy for nest checks. Its a good upgrade and they will accept it just fine They zip in very fast and is over in a second w...
