Information

This isn't about PM's, but since most people here are bird lovers, I wanted to share this information. Many in our neighborhood have noticed that hummingbirds have disappeared. Since most people make the food, I started researching sugar and made a surprising discovery. Food Lion confirmed that thei...

Strangest season ever

I got up very early this morning to watch for the martins. Instead of martins, a crow came in just after daylight. I was hoping the added tunnels would work, but it looks like I just wasted over a $100 on a problem I can't solve. This is obviously why the martins have left since there are no signs o...

Strangest season ever

I have an inside cat but there are none outside. The gourd rack is attached to my dock about 75 feet from shore.

Strangest season ever

It appears that the martins have left, not only from my site but from the neighbors as well. I have watched late afternoon and am pretty sure, they are not coming in before dark. I am sure there are no predators bothering them at this time. I have certainly not killed a crow but I have shot at them ...

Finally!

4 martins came in late yesterday afternoon. After a lot of hesitation, they finally accepted the cresent tunnels as well as the gourd entrance facing inward toward the pole. I thought changing the direction might help keep the crows out. This is the latest the martins have ever come in and I have to...

Jacque, sorry to hear you had a problem too. As soon as the crows got the babies out of the gourd, the adults left. There wasn't a martin in site by mid- May. I tried to run out and scare the crows but it didn't work. I even shot in the air but they still came back for more until nothing was left. L...

Actually Dick, they are American crows and there are a lot (probably 20 or 30) in this area now. Up until last year, I would only hear a few but rarely saw them. This had been an area with very few predators, just an occasional small hawk that was migrating through. We don't have sparrows or starlin...

Chickadee, thanks for your concern. Last year, the crows took every baby from my site. Total devastation! I've had a very successful site for 9 years but looks like I will have to start over. I added tunnels and changed to cresent entrances hoping the martins will accept them. My closest neighbor lo...

poles - lightening rods

I was also concerned when we put the metal pole up 10 years ago. Not only is it the highest thing out there, it is attached to a dock piling and the pole rests on the bottom of the lake. We have had some terrible storms but thankfully, lightening has never struck the PM pole. Good luck and hope you ...

My mistake--no martins

Louise, I still haven't seen a martin in my area so if you don't mind, would you delete my scout report? That way, I can have an accurate record of the date they actually arrive to stay at my site. Thanks.

My mistake--no martins

Thanks, I thought the report was for martins staying at my site. I was just excited to see a martin and immediately reported it. With the warmer weather, hopefully, I'll have good news to report soon.

My mistake--no martins

Well, I jumped the gun on reporting martins are back. The one that I saw obviously was migrating through and needed a place to rest on a cold, wet evening. I haven't seen or heard a martin since. They have been reported all around us but no sign of them here on the lake. I've been outside for the la...

Happy but concerned

One ASY male came in today and so far, so good. He appears to have accepted my changes to the setup and is now in a gourd with his head sticking out. Now I just have to see if the tunnels and cresent entrances will keep the crows out.

Glad to have no martins

Harold, I thought the same thing today as I looked out and saw the ice-covered gourds. We had no snow in this part of SC but had close to an inch of ice. It has been an awful two days but thankfully, our power just came back on. That's a nice set-up for a group of lucky martins.

New strategy

Gourds are up and ready. Hopefully, I haven't messed up my established site but since last years' disaster, I had to make some changes. I added tunnels and changed from round entrances to crescent. Also, I turned all the entrances to the center rather than facing outside. I am hoping these changes w...

crows are back

One of those awful crows came back today. It sat on my gourd rack looking for the gourds. It then flew to my neighbors house and looked in the box. Then it went on to the next neighbors pm house (which has round entrances) and looked in that one. It was obvious that it had returned for its' daily me...

Thanks KLC for the encouragment. I was heartbroken to see this happen. I've had a successful colony for many years and I will try the tunnels next year. Shooting in the air didn't stop the crows. They just came on in and helped themselves. The martins would leave the area as their babies were taken....
