John James Audobon

Postby Spiderman » Mon Nov 04, 2019 4:43 pm

I went to a museum this weekend and one of the paintings was by John Audubon. After a Google search when I returned home, I saw that he compiled allot of his bird pictures in a book titled "Birds of America".

With Google you can actually pull the book up online on an IPad or Laptop for free.

On page 170 he talks about Purple Martins and everyone including the Indians built houses for them every year. He stated people felt Martins were Good Luck and wanted them around their homes and businesses. He discusses when Martins would arrive in different states and he knew they left the United States when they migrated, but he did not know where they went.

While these entries in his book were from 198 years ago. The similarities to Martin's today was interesting. I encourage each of you to read about his writings on Purple Martins, as time permits.

I checked it out and I want to thank you for this post. Very interesting and enjoyable.
Mite control, heat venting, predator protection and additional feeding during bad weather add up to success.

Thanks for posting that. I have the Audubon Purple Martin print No. Pl. 45. I brought it matted and framed on Amazon last year. It hangs in the living area and I enjoy it almost everyday.
