Just showing off

Postby Rafke77 » Wed Aug 14, 2019 1:25 pm

It was a beautiful morning waking up to this! We have never seen this many at once! There are 24 we could count in the picture, and a few on the gourds in the back that we couldn't see! Just so cool hearing and seeing them all!

Id say! Love the way they just come in and act like they have been there the whole time. Thanks for sharing that one.

Of course! I have seen others post pictures like that, and I'd always hope to have the perch rods filled, and today was our turn!
I can't wait to see more pictures from others, and maybe a giant roost someday!

I believe our Martin's have started their migration. Over the last few days before I took that picture, we noticed a much higher concentration of Martin's around our property, and then the other morning the mass of them in that picture. We believe that was their farewell to us for this season. We have not seen any all day yesterday or today 😔. We're really hoping they were all memorizing their homes for next season!

This was interesting, no Martin's for those couple days, then last night, 7 came back, and now this morning 30+ ..... Can anyone with experience advise whether or not these are birds that are stopping for the night on their way South?

Just a guess but by their positions on porches id say the majority were your residents. Looks like they brought friends. Tough to tell with a still picture. Their body language tells alot, if they seem nervous etc. Smaller colonies like mine, you can tell the diffrence between residents and those transiting through. But yours look comfortable. All the more reason to keep housing up.
When your colony is more established you can get more confortable and lower/clean soon after they go but its good to wait till they all transit through on migration.

Thank you for the knowledge! Here is a link for a video to a different angle a few minutes later. Sorry for the shaky video, my girlfriend is apparently a novice at holding a phone still. 😜
