Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

SY M Arrives in central PA

An SY Male arrived at 10:15 AM this morning. Right on schedule compared to previous years.

I currently have 7 or 8 ASY Males. 1 ASY Males (#8) comes & goes. I hope he finds a mate & eventually stays. I have 2 ASY Females & 3 SY Females. I had 4 other ASY Females, for a few days, then they moved on north.

Last nest check 2 days ago showed 4 nests built so far. The 3rd SY Female arrived yesterday. 3 ASY Males sang their hearts out for her. She is paired now, so they will be nest building soon.

We've had a cold wet April & May to date. It's to warm up now, but the forecast keeps calling for passing rain & storms with few rain free days. Almost a repeat of last spring.

Congrats on the sy male. The weather seems to be especially wet this year.
Mite control, heat venting, predator protection and additional feeding during bad weather add up to success.
