New Trio Blank doors that are vented..

Postby Dave Reynolds » Wed Oct 03, 2018 9:32 am

Has everyone seen the new Trio Blank Doors that come with Venting Louvers stamped into the doors ?? What a great improvement to the doors, for those who used the expanded room concept.. Looks like the Trio door makers have listened to the costumers wishes.. Great new idea for the Martin Landlords..

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the update. I haven't heard of this improvement until now. This will greatly benefit the martins. Good to see the manufacturers of martin products are listening to the consumers, (PM landlords).
Mite control, heat venting, predator protection and additional feeding during bad weather add up to success.

This is a great improvement for the blank Trio replacement doors, offering the martins more ventilation and landlords an easier way to open the doors! The upgraded doors are available now at; https://www.purplemartin.org/shop/produ ... io-houses/

Yes, that is for the six pack of doors. The 12-pack member price would be $35.10.

I was hoping for the louvered when I ordered from PMCA but I guess Erva still had a few blanks they were trying to clear out. Hopefully, they'll only ship louvered from here on out.

Here's another option, a little more expensive but no shipping, looks to provide a larger venting area, and could be added to existing blank doors with a little work. I just took a quick look on the Walmart.com site, you could probably find more and possibly less expensive options at a big box hardware store. -- JohnP

Yes, I have a bag of 2" and 1" vents that I bought online. The 1" have been installed over the open vent holes at the top of the Trio doors. I'm considering putting the 2" vents over the round entrance holes of some extra Trio doors I have. Then, when the weather gets too hot, I could switch them to increase ventilation.

That sound like a great idea.... The Martins won’t notice any thing different except it will be cooler for them..

Martin Colony History: I have had martin housing for nearly 30 years but was never an active landlord until four to five years ago at this location. I live on Keystone Lake which is 25 miles west of Tulsa Oklahoma. For 2018 I will be expanding the colony to include the following: 1 Multi-Purpose pole with 2 Trio M12K houses with expanded compartments and 4 Troyer Vertical gourds underneath, 1 Multi-Purpose pole with 2 Trio Mini-Castles with expanded compartments and 4 Troyer Vertical Gourds underneath, 1 Fountain Gourd rack with 4 S&K Bo 11 Plus gourds with clinger tunnels and 8 Troyer Vertical Gourds, 1 Watersedge Coates Suite 8 house, 1 rack with 3 S&K Double Gourds, 1 Trendsetter 16 house with 4 Troyer Vertical Gourds underneath and 1 S&K Barn style house with expanded compartments. This will be a total of 79 nesting cavities offered for 2018. Hopefully this will help to increase my numbers over 2017 which were 17 active pair with 72 hatch and 71 fledge.

The only issue I see with these vented doors is that the vents are too low on the door. Given that most of us use nest sub floors/trays and then add the nesting material on top of that. The vents could be covered up by nesting material. I think this is a great idea but think they need to be higher on the door. Just my opinion.

thanks

With the fact that heat rises I have to agree with you Anita that with the doors being at the lower level of the house the cooling effect would be very little in my opinion. Venting should be at the highest possible point of any house compartment or gourd.

Dale... Thanks for the tip on the 2” round vents.. I went to Lowe’s to find them but they didn’t have any.. or heard of them. So I looked up the Company and made an order through them... Can’t wait to get them, need to measure them to see what size hole saw I will need to buy, to cut the holes for the vents.. Thanks again..

I have a Trio house that I just finished rebuilding for next year. It was in my neighbors barn attic for 10 years. I replaced the round doors with excluder II doors and enlarged the compartments by taking the old internal dividers out and using them for new external doors. The old round hole doors are now the internal doors that separate the nest from the entrance. 12 - 6x6 compartments are now 6 - 6x12 compartments.

Robert ... Welcome to the Forum.. Always good to see new members here... Sounds like you got the expanded rooms down great.. I never thought of using the out side doors for the inside wall between the room and nesting area .. Good Job... Good luck in 19
