Dave, I was in your neck of the woods a couple weeks ago. We passed a golf course that had a couple of Martin houses but it wasn’t Oxbow. We were near Wittens farm market. Glad to see you had good success!

I only put up two Trio houses and four Troyer Horizonal Gourds on the single 3" pole. All had Conley11 entrances on them.. The Manage on the Oxbow Golf Course ask me yesterday if I would put up another set of houses and gourds for next year.. So I said I would of course.. Have a great day..

Thanks all!
Dave, I don’t think I’ve ever been to Little Hocking but we used to pick up fertilizer at Belpre. How are your martins doing?
...
Buckeyefarmer.. Did you have to travel very far to get to Belpre, for fertilizer? I can’t remember who sold fertilizer in Belpre. I lived in Belpre for about 20 some years, but now in Little Hocking.. (Just about 10 miles from the toll bridge on 7 south) .. There are lot of landlords in Belpre..

Dave,
It’s been several years since we got fertilizer there. We loaded material from a barge location north of town I believe. It’s a two hour trip for us to get there from our farm.

Still have seven more to go, three are still little gray fuzz balls, but are strong and healthy. I found 2 late sleepers in one of the empty nests cavities. They didn’t mind me a bit checking the housing. They flew out about half way up as I raised the house. Still have about 2 dozen PM staying the night. I only see just the parent birds of the chicks remaining during the day. Yesterday I set a stub post for a third T14 (FYI... the ground in late July is hard as a brick!)

Quite a gathering this morning. I had around 85 Martins visiting the barnyard. Twenty or so were perched on the T14’s and 65 perched on the entrance wire from the road.

I’m an empty nester as of 15 minutes ago. I took the last T-14 down for a nest check of my final family of chicks, really wasn’t sure that they hadn’t already fledged. When I opened the door I found the last two chicks and suddenly one took flight. That was pretty cool! It came out and dropped to within inches of the ground and just that quick he was up and away with several adults cheering him along. I just stood to the side of the house and with the door still open I could here it’s sibling cheeping. Within a minute it came out as well with a little better aerodynamic flight. It flew to the very top of a large silver maple and made a successful landing.
If they all survived fledging , I had 118 fledge from 27 pairs. I still have a couple dozen hanging around, but I suppose since they’ve all fledged it won’t be long till it’s all quiet.
I’m already looking forward to next year. I built the pole for another T-14 yesterday in the shop.

Dave,
I use 5” galvanized air system tubing from our grain storage facility. I set a 60” piece in concrete leaving 2 feet above the ground. I use a 4 bolt galvanized coupling to attach the pole. The pole is 12’ long and at the top I cut a 1-1/4” x 6” long slot for the pulley and attach it with a 3/4” bolt. I also drill another 5/8” hole at the top below the pulley for an 8’ long fiberglass perch rod.

Thanks Dave. Are you still seeing Martins there along the river. I’ve had about 3 dozen here in the evenings the last few days.

..

Buckeyefarmer... My Martins (at my Golf Course site) left around the last few days in July.. I’m only out there twice a week playing golf, and I have not seen any sence then.. I have seen a few fly over my home two days ago, singing.. They look like they were heading South... A friend of mine in Belpre, Ohio also saw his Martins leave around the last of July. Another Friend in Pomoroy, Ohio had a late nest and they fledged around August 14.. So not a lot around now.. Do you still have Martins this late..??

Yes I still have about 30 here in the evenings. They come in around 8:30 and leave before 7:00 the next morning. I never see them at all through the day.

Buckeyefarmer.... I would love to have Martins this late in August.. I’m sure it makes the season that much better. Adding two or three weeks to the end of the season.. You are so lucky.... Enjoy them as long as they stay...
