Yes - a Carolina Chickadee. Great little birds, and they will use nestboxes. Babies look like bumblebees

Thanks. I have them in my area. First time I've ever seen one.
Do they compete with BBs for the same boxes I have up?

They do not have the same habitat preference as bluebirds (open lawns, mowed fields, etc) - chickadees are more likely to choose boxes at woodland edges or with cover & shrubs around them. You can put a hole reducer on boxes for chickadees so they don't get taken over by house sparrows. Entrance hole of 1-1/8 inch would be best for them.

I hope they stay and nest with you - over the years, in two states, my bluebird boxes have hosted bluebirds, house wrens, bewick's wrens, brown-crested flycatchers, tufted titmice, black-capped chickadees, and tree swallows - all very enjoyable birds.

The may not nest there because the BB box is not very close to shrubs or trees. About 50 to 60 feet away from nearest tree.

I have a male BB working hard to get a female right now. :)

Martin Colony History: 2014 1 pair 3 hatched 3 fledged
2015 1 pair 5 hatched 5 fledged
2016 1 pair 5 hatched 4 fledged
2017 2 pair 8 hatched 8 fledged
2018 4 pair 15 hatched

My chickadee would nest in the gym set poles. I had to ban the grandkids from using the set until the babies fledged. The BB's got ran off from their nesting in my tree by sparrow's, so I put a BB nest box in the yard alittle to close to the gym set for the BB's. The BB's ran the chickadee off, so I made a chickadee nest box out of PVC pipe. You can find the plans on line for free. It works an I love putting them where they are safe and I get to check on them. Good luck to all this bird season.

Yes.. I know about the PVC plans for Chickadees. Making two or three and will place them in the wooded area across from my property. Will be fun to monitor

Martin Colony History: I started trying to attract Purple Martins in 2011. I got my first breeding pair in 2013.

2013-1 pair, 2014-4 pair, 2015-8 pair, 2016-12 pair 60 babies :-).

The first year I put up my BB house, Carolina Chickadees used it. Since then, they try, but the Bluebirds run them off. I saw a pair checking it out this past weekend (Chickadees).
