Have had luck with off season sparrow and starling trapping. Blains for the sparrows and nest box traps for starlings.
Never saw a van ert insert trap in action though. Starlings were at the suet feeders, I hung a woodpecker house with a van ert trap right behind the feeders on the fence about 3 feet away. A starling started to check out the woodpecker house, he hesitated to go in but as another starling was showing intrest in he went. Trap didn't go off! Starling poked his head out and was looking around and wham!! Replaced by a red 🔴
One less starling in the world. Thats 4 starlings in nest box traps off season. Shot 11. 13 sparrows shot, 10 trapped. 2 currently in the blain-gitmo hacienda.
Found that a nest box attached to the blains is a good addition, feed and water them every day provide some cover from heat and rain and they last. A small mirror on the feed trey seems to help.

I'm going to try real hard to put a dent in the sparrow population. Live sparrows are best bait. Had two day before yesterday, last evening another. They show no intrest in nest boxes but starlings are ready to poke their heads in anything.
Glad your having success! I like to think I'm doing the woodpeckers a favor whacking starlings.
