Martin Colony History: 2018 will be my first try. 6 S&K B09s. 29 eggs - 8 fledged
2019 - 12 Troyer Horizontals with tunnels, 6 S&K B09s and 12 B011s all with tunnels. 43 eggs - 36 fledged
2020 - Rack 1 - 6 B011s, Rack 2 - 24 B011s, and Rack 3 - 24 Troyer Horizontals. All gourds have tunnels, porches and crescent/Conley 11 entrances; racks have predator guards. 161 eggs - 88 fledged

Checked my colony's progress yesterday. Rack 1 has eggs in all six gourds; 4 chicks and 1 egg in a gourd, 5 eggs each in 4 gourds and 1 gourd with 6 eggs. Count went from 21 eggs last week to 27 eggs and 1 chick this check with 100% occupancy. Rack 2 has eggs in 16 gourds (67%) and the count went from 36 last week to 73 on the 10th. Rack 3 has eggs in 12 gourds (50%) and the count raised to 48 eggs and 3 chicks from 34 eggs last week. Now have 148 eggs and 7 chicks in Purple Martin production in 34 of my 54 gourds (63% under production). 20 gourds are barren; some are flat nada, some look like nesting was attempted. We'll see what next week has to offer.
Sandhill Cranes nested on my neighbor's property. Nest with 2 eggs produced a single chick. It was hatched on the 8th, was stumbling around on the 9th, 100 yards away from the nest site with parents on the 10th. This morn, the 11th, it was sprinting! Altricial and precocial; martins and cranes. Second egg abandoned.

Bad storm rolled thru south Florida yesterday afternoon around 2:30; horizontal rain with winds over 60 mph and lots of lightning. Came up so fast I wasn't able to lower my racks. Two withstood the blast but I lost Rack 1. It and its 6 gourds hit the ground and only one gourd remained attached to the rack. The others were scattered about. I raised the rack, attached the gourds, replaced the perching rods and witnessed birds returning but they certainly seemed puzzled. 27 eggs and 4 chicks hit the ground. What a shame. I didn't check the interiors; figure the martins can do more than I. The sun is back out after a dreary Monday morning. Will inspect the gourds later today. Not anticipating what I will likely find.
The sandhill chick made it; that's some good news. One of the nests on this rack was predicted to hatch tomorrow. Find it hard to close this post with my usual farewell. But nevertheless....
Happy Martining, Mike
