Worried PM Landlord

Postby LisaJ » Sat Feb 22, 2020 11:30 am

I put up a new PM apartment this year, (same as last year, but new). I reconfigured the cavities from 6x6" to 6 x 12". I had plugged the entrances bc I saw HOSP and Starlings trying to claim.
One morning, I saw a pm scout on the porch, being a bit confused bc he couldn't get into a cavity. I pulled all of the entrance covers but have not seen any pm since. I am in Prosper TX, north of Plano.
Am I worried for nothing, or have I totally messed up??

Dont worry, keep an eye out. Its early yet!

Do you have round or starling resistant openings?

This season our arrivals were about 10 days early. Had put everything up but like you plugged entrances for the exact same reason. Anyway, just as soon as i got home from work i unplugged everything, and about an hour later were claimed by martins. I suspect they came by in the morning but couldnt get in.
Watch in the evening, have to watch very close because this early they are all business and very little socializing...they zip right in and are quiet once they settle down. I think you will be just fine, part of martin landlord anxiety! The forum is good therapy. 😀

Thank you, Tom! I noted that it was early March last year, so I will impatiently wait. I bought pine straw from the Association. May put a few in each as a welcome home gift!

So you're new this year, or you were new last year, or you just changed the type of housing you have? I'm little lost. LOL

Id put the pine straw in now, better in a cavity than in the garage lol. if you havnt already done so id also smear a little mud at the entrances to make it look used and a bit more appealing. To a martin.

Thanks Brad and CC,
I am on my 3rd year as Landlord. I took down the old house and put a new one up. I wondered how the returning pm's would react to new digs.
Yes, I have put the pine straw in. Mud is my next step to give it that lived-in look!

I think you will be fine, watch in the evening. Last night was miserable, cold. I wanted to watch the birds return to look them over for stress...they normally come in at 6. Two came down around 515, didnt see or hear them. Only their singing in the house gave them away. Other 2 came in as normal, has been a miserable few days. All looked good today, female visitor this am, she has been coming around but has yet to stay.

This will be your third year.....

Nothing you’ve done has run off your Martins. As long as the house is in the same spot, you’re good. If you moved it somewhere else more than 3-5 feet away then you did wrong.

Pine straw is good. Next time get some at Lowe’s or similar and pay $5.00 for it. No need to have it shipped in. It’s the same stuff.

I don’t know where and/or when smearing mud on a clean house became in vogue but Martins don’t smear mud on anything. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve even seen mud used in a Martins nest. I’d skip that step. Just a waste of time IMO.

Relax, it’s early. I’m the one with late Martins.

I don’t think you said anything about moving your pole but thought that I’d throw that out there. I saw a long time landlord move his gourd racks one winter. He moved them about 200 yards towards his house and too close to trees. He also changed from natural gourds to Natureline plastic gourds. He went from having 30-40 pairs to ZERO. One year to the next. Changing from naturals to plastic had nothing to do with him losing birds. Moving his racks did.

Thank you, Brad. I am finally relieved that I am just being anxious. House is in the same spot. I tried Lowe's, but they looked at me like they had never heard of pine straw. I am set for many seasons with what I have now. Watching and waiting!!

If it was returning martin from your place from last year I wouldn't worry. It will be back, a couple hours is not enough to deter them. When I moved from my old house years ago I offered to leave some housing behind and the new owners didn't want me to so I took them down and moved them about 7 miles to my current house. The next year I drove by watching for them to return. They spent about a week flying around the yard looking for their housing before they finally dispersed. There is also a chance it was a martin from somewhere else that was just stopping by.

Lisa,

Where in North Texas are you? Are you near the DFW area? I have a place I have shared with others where I get pine needles.

Lisa,

It's not store. It's a grove of pine trees loaded with fresh pine needles.

I sent you a private message with the details. I hope it is close to you.
