Wall guard for Trendsetter nest trays-wing entrapment

Postby brent » Fri Jan 24, 2020 10:32 am

Hi everyone,

You may have notice that the Trendsetter nest trays come with an optional wall guard (needs to be glued in place) that can act as additional protection against predators. It also states that it may help prevent wing entrapment. Has any one tried these? If so please share your experience. Last year I had 2 episodes of wing entrapment and was able to get to the birds in time to free them. If this helps in any way I'll install them on all the nest trays. Thanks.

Brent

Doubtful will help. It doesn't address entrapment at the entrance. But...maybe worth trying as it's low cost.

I tried to google them to see what they looked like and came up with nothing. So, what do the look like and how are they placed?
I had 4 entrapments in 2018, so decided to make some guards myself. I took a 3 inch thick walled abs pipe. cut a 3/4 inch slice off the pipe. Cut the ring in half, which gave me two nice 3/4 inch crescent shaped wing guard. Glued or siliconed to a crescent entrance with a 1/8 inch offset from the entrance. You can attached inside or outside. No entrapments in 2019.
2011- first year trying, a few visitors.
2012-One ASY pair, raised two young, lots of subby visitors. So thankfull.
2013-daily subby visits.
2014-Six SY pairs
2015-18 pair, 83 fledglings
2016-36 pair, 147 fledglings
2017-52 pairs, 192 fledglings.
2018-60 pair, 246 fledglings.
2019-59 pair, 238 fledglings.

Hi Archer,

You can see how they are used on the PMCA shop. Search for nest trays. They now sell the nest trays with the optional wall guard.

Thanks,

Brent

Are you referring to this item? It is described as an interior baffle, I see no reference to wing entrapment. https://www.purplemartin.org/shop/produ ... est-trays/
