If you have Troyer Horizontal Gourds and have a young Starling that can breach the opening, Troyer makes a slide (on page 9 of their catalog) that will catch the Starling alive.
I use round holes in my gourds and catch most of the Starlings in my area before the Martins arrive. Usually between 15 & 25 Starlings per year. We have a wide assortment of woodpeckers and I have seen the Starlings evict a female red headed woodpecker from her nest.
Once you buy one you can probably make some copies if you are handy working with aluminum sheeting.
I will add that I added a 2oz fishing weight to keep the Starlings from opening the slide and escaping. They are actually very smart. Probably a distant member of the crow family.
Welcome to the internet's gathering place for Purple Martin enthusiasts
