What size aluminum square pole to use?

Postby threefingers2 » Wed Sep 18, 2019 9:52 am

Hi all.... I currently have a telescoping pole with a Waters edge 8 room house and 4 troyer gourds hanging from it. It was such a pain to raise and lower I'm looking to get a square pole with a winch and going with the multi purpose rack so I can add another Waters Edge house and and use the 4 gourds on it. I'm having a dilemma on what size pole to get 2 or 3 inch. does anyone have a thought on this ?

I am not sure the weight of your setup but I have a AAA gourd rack with 16 gourds. It is 14 foot in the air and I have had it for close to 10 years and it is straight as an arrow. If I see a storm forecasted I will lower it but over the years there is always one or two good storms a year that come through at night with not much notice. In really strong winds it will sway but that's it. If it was any larger and held more gourds I would want a 3 inch but for the 16 gourds it is perfect.
2019- Currently 31 complete nests (27 with eggs or babies) 94 babies hatched and 19 eggs still to hatch) 6-22-19
2018- 15 pair last count 49 fledged
2017 3 SY pair nested, 12 eggs total, fledged 10. 4 additional SY's stayed all summer but never paired/nested.
2016 1 pair fledged 4

2013 Moved 6 miles away, 1 pair fledged 2.
2012 30 pair fledged 100.
2011 12 pair (11 that nested), 43 fledged.
2010 5 pair, 21 eggs, 16 hatched, 14 fledged.

... threefingers2 ,,, First of all .... .Welcome to the PMCA forum.. Great to have you here... I put up a 3 inch MMP pole last year and another one this Spring.. Both hubs on the poles hold two houses and four gourd.. Really easy to work with and a brake winch to raise and lower the houses.. I went 3 inches on the square pole size, mainly because I lived 6 or so miles from the site.. And I could not monitor the houses and gourds during storms.. I just felt better with the 3 inch square pole..

Thank you Dave for your thoughts on this. Do u see the Martins liking the gourds over the house or or which filled first ?

Bigger the better. I bought the 3 inch pole and winch. If you can afford it buy it. I think it would survive most storms but I play it safe and lower all my houses 3 0r 4 feet before storms. I've had poles bent and don't want togo thru that again. I have 2 trio m12k houses on it. Martins seem to like. Eight out of twelve rooms were used and fledged young. Three out of four gourds were used and fledged young. Years ago I would have told you that houses were the way to go. That's all that was around here. But now and the last 4 or 5 years, I think gourds are more liked, at least here. I have 23 gourds, a few under each house. They seem to take them first now instead of a house compartment.

I bought the 3" square poles also.

So far they have seen 60mph winds with 28 gourds attached and are still perfect.

,, threefingers2.. When I put the first houses and gourds up at my satellite site, the first early Martins took the four gourds under the houses first. Then as more came, they filled 11 rooms of the 12 rooms in the two houses. The same thing happened when I put up the second pole with houses and gourds. The early Martins took the four gourds first and then the other martins fill the houses up.. Martins didn't have any trouble filling up the houses, but like you ask, the Martins did take the gourds first..
