Nature Canada and members of the Ontario Purple Martin Association have joined forces to locate and document Purple Martin Roosts in Ontario. One of its successes is officially establishing the location of the Purple Martin Roost in Point Pelee National Park. OPMA has been involved in officially documenting and monitoring the Point Pelee Roost since July 10, 2018 and are happy to report that 15-20000 Purple Martins are visiting the site on a daily basis. The Roost monitors visit the Roost three times a week to note the roost condition : numbers, species and staging areas. So far the results have been spectacular. Although the roost is inaccessible within Point Pelee National Park, there are other various viewing areas to catch the event. The Roost was first visually acknowledged in 2016 by OPMA and: confirmed by the same group. Roosts are often overlooked until they appear on Doppler radar in some form of doughnut shape. The Purple Martins and other Swallows make it difficult to find since they arrive at dusk under the cover of darkness.
Keep the martins flying in Ontario!
