Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!
Great looking gourds please dry them well before working on them. I hope the gourds have good thick walls so they will stand up to whatever Mother nature drops on them. When I grew gourds all to often the walls were too thin to be used for martin houses.

2011 A pair of subbies fledged three young but none returned in 2012
2015 One Pair of subbies came and stayed a few nits but got chased away by Bluebirds and Tree swallows.
2017 0ne pair of subbies nested and fledged 4 young

Those are beautiful gourds! They should make excellent martin cavities! When I look at your gourds, I wish that I still had at least one natural gourd rack in my colony. Though I now use all plastic gourds, I still like naturals very much and they are outstanding cavities for martins. We all will be looking forward to seeing photos of those gourds turned into martin cavities! Good luck in 2017!

Thank you Emil and Steve! It took me 4 years to get nice ones! I used sand and cow poop for the soil in a raised bed! I watered when it was dry! But we had a hot and humid summer. Plus it didn't freeze until November. So they had a longer growing season! I'm crafting a few for gifts and if I get martins this year I'll fix some up for them in 2018! I have several naturals made up already and will hang them under the THG's. My fingers and toes are cramped from keeping them crossed!

Those gourds are gorgeous! A lot of thought, time and energy..not to mention water...went in to them. Reminds me of when I first started with martins, I was told to look for gourds that were large enough to hold a bunch of bananas...that size cavity would comfortably hold a martin family. Your gourds absolutely fit the bill!
Yes, keep your fingers crossed. But I really think you'll be a landlord this year. The excitement builds. We are ticking the days off...
Have a Merry Christmas Sharon.

Sharon,
For the big 48" gourd...Don't discard...Cut it in half, use a 1/8" divider wooden divider. Make a duplex with 2 separate entrances and access ports.
Just a thought,
