My first pair of martins arrived this morning! I had a feeling I would get some arrivals today due to the strong south winds we had yesterday. Weather forecast does not look good for tomorrow wintery weather and a low of 25.

Congrats Ray,
Another season begins! Have a great one!
Hope to see you at the VA PM Field Day this year! BTW...I am planting some of the large gourd seeds! Great expectations!
We had 52 come in to roost last night! Some moved on today but still close to 40 birds braving the cold temperatures!

Thanks everyone. I ended the day with 3 martins they stayed inside for most of the day since it was raining. Late in the afternoon after the rain stopped they were out on the powerline. I thawed a few crickets to feed, the 2 males wouldn't take them but the female did.

- Martin Colony History: Had a colony many years ago which dwindled over a couple of years and then did not return. Kept trying each year for almost 20 years and finally had a small success in 2011 with two pairs nesting. Colony has grown slowly each year with 22 pairs in 2015. In 2016 my gourd rack of 18 gourds filled up so I added 4 more gourds and then put up a small rack of 6 gourds. All of those were claimed within a few days so I believe I have at least 25 pairs this year.
Congratulations Ray! I have been eagerly awaiting your news as I knew it was time for your birds to arrive. Hope you have another great martin season and look forward to your updates and photos.
